Beautifully carved columns. Rimondi Fountain, Rethymno, Crete, Greece.

The Venetian governor J. Rimondi started the reconstruction of the current fountain in 1626. During the Venetian Period (1205-1457AD many towns on Crete suffered severe water shortages. Drinking water for the inhabitants was supplied by public fountains.

At the bottom of the fountains are troughs that were designed for animals to drink from. The recurring lion motif in work of the Venetian period is the lion of St Mark.
