Keeper of the Stars (Justice)

Featured in The Divine Feminine, Sisters in Arms and Painted Ladies groups

Acrylic on 9×12 canvas board – a little inspiration from my favorite artist, Erte! She is a sky goddess, guardian of the stars and night sky, she’s the one that makes the sun set and the moon rise.

She also stands as Justice one of the Major Arcana cards in a tarot deck. The two most important laws governed by Justice are really two sides of the same coin. First comes the law of cause and effect, stating that all events are connected and each present state is the result of all past states. This is a such strange idea to get your mind around because sometimes seemlingly meaningless actions will have great ramifications. Justice shows that every action you do will eventually have an effect, someday, and you really have no idea of knowing what that event is until it happens. Often the figure on the Justice card is pictured sitting in front of a curtain; this curtain hides the machinations of the universe that bring about these final results.

From the law of cause and order develops the law of Karma, showing that all your actions will return to you eventually. They will be modified slightly, and they are often strengthened over time, but the lesson is still the same. As you sow, so shall you reap. This is really a simple elaboration of the law of cause and effect. Under this new law, not only will everything you do have an effect, everything you do will have an effect on you. This is where it becomes critical to be mindful of your actions, because everything you take will come back to you eventually. Before Justice, you have to answer for all your actions, right and wrong. Life, if nothing else, is fair.

She raises her curtain to start a sunset or to bring on the night, all the while, behind it, the universe stirs. She is cause and effect embodied, Every sunset she makes sets into motion the timing for the next day. She governs the laws of the universe.

    She’s beautiful.
I read your comment on Helena’s paintings regarding sleep. I have a hag-stone (stone with a hole occurring naturally through the centre) on my bedhead.
Also, it is VERY important to “ground” yourself, sending roots deep into the ground, imagining them anchoring you, before attempting travel.

Very beautiful and very interesting writing…I have learnt a lot… specially from different points of view.
Your depicting is really perfect, regarding what you have understood about this character. Sounds a bit like a karmic point of view about life… and the point is that she is holding all that contains the elements of harmony under her wings.
You have given her a srot of angelic presence and substituted the wings by a mantel where the cycles of Life symboliced by the Moon, stars and Sun are there inexorables and sustained in perfect motion. It seems that she is the perfection of our actions the ruler of our inside motivations. But what I see in the usual image of Justice is the holding of a sword and an scale…the scale is in constant moving…and the sword in constant cutting off that which is not necessariy, in order to help us to discern. It is good so see if our actions have a “good or bad karma” into themselves… may be we have learn from consecuences in order to be open to discernment..
Your Justice is enigmatic and open to the whole Human Universe. It resembles very clearly a sort of Christ in the Cross… as a symbol of Cosmic attachtment to the Lie-Death-Life cycles…..a Tree of Life rooted upon Death.
    Very beautiful. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the fave! And agian, thank you for your wonderful interpretation. You made me think of many other aspects of my own painting that I never noticed. As for the usual sword and scale – I feel that this version of Justice is a bit more subtle. Her arms are out, palms up…she herself is the scale, the universe weighs it’s actions in her hands. The sword is symoblized by her curtain. She can raise it into night, or into a storm, throw up a sunset or a shooting star….she controlls the heavenly signs that help us know when we are off our path.
