Tsunami 2004
Illustration board, gesso and acrylic. A tweak here and there on picnik.
BEST IF VIEWED LARGE!
This was my first attempt at using gesso and I loved creating texture. I painted this in December of 2004 immediately after the Tsunami. The water colored hues were not intentional and just kind of happened. When I finished I couldn’t believe what I saw. A representation of the Tsunami.
This was also the same year my dad died, April 18th, 2004 so originally I called this painting A Traumatic Decade. It was one more painting that showed the beginnings of working through my dad’s death.
This is actually a crop of the original painting because in the bottom right hand corner, two rectangular shapes also appeared. They were vertical and looked like the Twin Towers and were painted in red, again unknowingly at the time. I think the red represented the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001. I did not keep them in this version because the right side of the painting was so dark they kind of got lost.
The cropping of the painting caused me to change the title to just Tsunami 2004 because that was the focal point of the painting. And to me it shows the power of the unconscious mind in art. I was working through traumas happening over all over the world, and trying to make sense of tragedy.
A long story but one that I think is important as you view the work for yourself. Perhaps not even one of my best, but powerful in mind and the healing impact of art in my life!
