For those of you unfamiliar with the pangolin, it’s an amazing and unique creature found in Asia and Africa. Also known as the scaly anteater, there are several varieties of the animal – including the ground pangolin, the tree pangolin, the giant pangolin and several others. Sadly, it’s extremely endangered in Asia due to poaching and habitat loss. Its meat is considered a delicacy, and in addition, it’s used in many Chinese traditional medicines and is believed to have many magical powers / charms. The pangolin can roll itself into a tight ball when threatened, where it’s armored scales (made of keratin) protect it from harm. Once rolled up, it takes considerable force to unroll it.

Having a great love animals, fairytales, and world mythology, Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley fuses these influences into her strikingly unique illustrations. Her artwork strikes a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her artworks have been likened to images from an undiscovered ancient civilization or culture.
