This has been a rough week as my cat has been sick and the vet thinks he may have cancer. I have had to do a bunch of expensive tests to determine if he does or not; in the meantime, I have to hand feed him since he won’t eat by himself. I’ve had Harley as a constant companion for almost fourteen years now so it’s pretty tough to see him so sick (he used to be a big fellow at 19 lbs. and now he’s down to a little over 13 lbs.). Since I’ve never done a portrait of him, I decided I should do one. I used a photograph I took of him when he was feeling better as inspiration.

UPDATE: Harley Cat passed away on November 14 2011 around noon E.S.T., a few days after I made this picture. It had to be one of the worst days of my life. I wrote a post about it on my blog here, as well as included some photos of Harley.

Having a great love animals, fairytales, and world mythology, Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley fuses these influences into her strikingly unique illustrations. Her artwork strikes a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her artworks have been likened to images from an undiscovered ancient civilization or culture.

Gorgeous work. I hope Harley does not have cancer and he does get better. I had my little girl for 22 years and it was heartbreaking to lose her. Hugs and prayers to you and Harley.

oh, Lynnette. I am so sad to hear that Harley is not well. That really seems like an understatement but I hope you know how much I care. I absolutely love this portrait you did of your beloved Harley! A favorite for sure of mine, for many reasons. Hugs to you and to Harley too.

I know exactly what you are feeling.. Mischa, my fourteen year old, was diagnosed with Lymphoma about 6 months ago.. he had surgery to remove the tumor and has been on expensive meds.. he is thin, but he is eating, pooping and purring.. and is due for another blood panel lab work-up…..I hope we both have our little sweeties for a lot longer..♥

Beautiful portrait. I lost my cat companion of 17 years last spring. She inspired many drawings.
I recently adopted two cats from the pound, one of whom had just lost his human. We both understand grief.
