Artwork is inspired by the literature classic Moby Dick by Herman Melville. I wanted Moby Dick to look ancient and almost elemental and so I stylized him into an almost driftwood pattern.

Mixed Media (gouache, oil pastels, colored pencils, sharpie and liquid silver leaf) on 19 × 12 inch grey Canson paper.

Having a great love animals, fairytales, and world mythology, Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley fuses these influences into her strikingly unique illustrations. Her artwork strikes a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her artworks have been likened to images from an undiscovered ancient civilization or culture.

Love this Lynnette! – MD is one of my favourite books (I’m on the side of the whale every time!:-) – this is a wonderful depiction…….it couldn’t be anything other than MD himself!

  • thank you Kafka! I am on the whale’s side as well lol. I am uploading a journal in a few minutes with some WIPs from this piece if you want to check out behind the scenes so to speak.

You are un freakin stoppable. I am jealous of your time and prolific production! You go girl! Another great one! I like the seeming departure from older styles,,,,ever so slightly more flowing linear… Love the flipped dinghy! :-)

  • thanks Jerry. I originally had the whale just white but then I just started to see the lines on him and so put them in. I like how it makes him look like driftwood or even a bit like sailor’s scrimshaw. Anyway, I hope to see more from you soon
