Ming Myaskovsky Fine Art Award
for Celtic Mythical
SoJie 5, July 2010
July 2010 Juried Invitational Exhibition
Drew this for a self-portrait contest. This is also my first ever self-portrait, beyond a couple of exercises in art classes when I was younger. I obviously took some liberties here ;)
I didn’t get some aspects of the portrait quite right (the nose and the chin are not quite right for example, and I have a much paler skin tone), but this is perhaps how I would look in another reality ;)
Mixed media on heavy textured purple watercolor paper (Canson). Original measures 19 × 12.5″

Having a great love animals, fairytales, and world mythology, Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley fuses these influences into her strikingly unique illustrations. Her artwork strikes a primal chord in many viewers, with almost Jungian associations to the colors and shapes. Her artworks have been likened to images from an undiscovered ancient civilization or culture.

I really love the look and colors in this one! I think this may be my favorite of yours yet!
Thanks Lynsye. I am a bit bugged because the face is not quite right (for a self-portrait) BUT as a regular face I like it as it looks more “real” than some of my other faces.

It’s saying, “Pssst. I think you need some conditioner to detangle your hair”. lol.

OMG!!!! I love it! What a fabulously gorgeous composition!!!! This is so beautiful! You need to be famous;the sooner the better!!!! Your work is so individualized . Wow! This is my most favorite to date. The perfect combination of contrast between back and forground, color and light and just perfect design elegance. You so rock!!! AGAIN!
I am glad you like it Rhino. Now when are we going to see more stuff from YOU! :D

I definately see you in her. I never am happy with my self-portraits and have never posted any. I think this is beautiful Lynnette. You made yourself look like a wise and beautiful goddess, what’s wrong with that?
ha ha. thanks. I kept going back and forth because first I was trying to “fix” flaws and then I was like, no can’t do that, and went in the opposite direction and then I looked like a sea harpy. can’t win! lol.

There’s something to be said about taking liberties when creating art. :) This is really nice work Lynette.
