“The Vigil” (Work in Progress)
24 × 36 inches
Oil Pastel and Colored Pencils on Pastelbord
Inspired by the folktales of elephant graveyards, and the very real stories of elephant cognition, “The Vigil” represents the living saying goodbye to a loved one. The green elephants represent life, while the blue and white elephant represents the spirit of a departed member of the herd. In the background are stars, which also represents the spirits of others who have passed on. The elephants are holding vigil with the spirit elephant, saying goodbye. In the background is the African baobab tree, which is seen as a symbol of the Tree of Life.
Below is a video of me discussing the painting.
