Built in 1450 by the Pringle family and remained in the family until 1645 when it was bought by William Scott. Sir Walter Scott spend time here as a child recovering from an illness. Smailholm tower lies between Kelso and Melrose in the Scottish borders and is maintained by Historic Scotland.
