Artist's Description

BEST VIEWED LARGER

I took this shot from the Old Donner Pass Road at the summit in October 2009, looking across at the Union Pacific’s trans Sierra train tracks and snow shed. One of many snow sheds. Snow sheds were constructed to protect trains in dangerous slide areas from avalanches. Northern California ~ Lynn

The building of the railroad over the Sierra Nevada was a monumental accomplishment of 19th-century American grit and determination, allowing the movement of people and goods over the mountains —and the opening of the West. Following the pioneers, the railroad pushed through the high pass between Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV. Experience the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada on a train trek across these rugged granite mountains. Discover how the Gold Rush decided the capital of California, how silver and gaming turned Reno into the biggest little city in the world, and how the railroad had an impact on the lives of area inhabitants, including Native Americans.

My camera is a Digital Canon Rebel EOS XT
