Monmouth Beach is a pebble and rock beach stretching approximately 1 mile from Lyme Regis’s harbour, the Cobb, (West Dorset) to Pinhay Bay, (East Devon). It is situated below Ware Cliffs, and is constructed of a bay and a cove, Poker’s Pool and Chippel Bay.

View Of Monmouth Beach From Just Off Of The Lyme Regis Cobb.Monmouth beach is so named because the Duke of Monmouth landed there in 1685 during his attempt to take the crown from King James II. Following the defeat of the Duke of Monmouth, twelve locals were hanged on the beach on the order of the notorious “Hanging Judge” Jeffreys.

[edit] FossilsMonmouth Beach is now owned by the National Trust, and is very popular with fossil hunters, as ammonites, belemnites, plant fossils and even a few remains of Ichthyosaur vertebrae fossils have been found here. The cliffs are estimated to be 199-189 million years old.

There have been several landslips here lately, would be a terrible shame to lose those clffs

Great capture of the beach Lynn – haven’t been here for many years but it looks exactly the same as when we last saw it (perhaps just a new beach hut or two) xx

  • There has been several landslips Mattie, be sad if they lose those cliffs xx

Nice capture Lynn. Was this the beach that was recently closed do to unstable cliffs and landslips? xx

  • Yes that’s the one Richard, some of the chalets are really tilted forward, wont take much for them to go, still get people hunting for fossils at the end there, very dangerous xx
