Pastel on Canson Mi Teinte Tex Paper – 75cm x 55cm
This is the Goulburn River, near Seymour, Victoria, Australia. The Ekberg family owned a property with a large area of river frontage, part of which formed an island in the middle of the river – hence the title.
My friend and fellow Bubbler, Greg Pastoll, wrote this poem to go with this painting!!!
The orb that bastes the southern sky
With glare enough to fry the eye
Is halted by the friendly leaf
And water flowing, gives relief.
Of bouncing, dancing light and shade
such monuments to art are made.
The river muse, in one grand sweep
Has given us a jewel to keep.

The gold and rust colours against the blue is fantastic. The ripple reflections are amazing.
Well done Lynda
Many thanks Mick. This one was VERY time consuming, and I really enjoyed those abstract shapes in the ripples. (I am entering this in a rather prestigious art show up this way in June).

Gorgeous work Lynda…..I wish you would do a piece in the workshop so I could see how you work. This is so smooth and really looks like water!!!
Oooh! I have been so busy Elizabeth, and I have probably missed the workshop altogether!!! I have seen some of the other amazing pieces coming up on my image feed. I guess I will have to wait until next time! Thanks for the lovely comment for this one.

Great work Lynda! Brain picking time:
How do you get the colours to portray a dusk light, when it must take hours to complete a painting like this? Do you use photos as reference, or does the painting change as the light changes?
Thank you very much Simon.
The trick is to do some very quick pastel sketches on the spot and then you get the colours accurately to take back to the studio for a finished work. I usually take along half a dozen quarter sheets and just scribble away. I also take reference photos but I find that they don’t convey the colours as well as an on the spot sketch. I have a box of pastels separate from my main haul, so they are ready to grab at any time, and the beauty of pastel is you don’t have to wait for it to dry. So for this one I used my photos for the composition and my sketches for the colours.

Certainly the wettest one I have seen you do! Those clear blue paths on each side of the trees speak to me.
Ha Ha! Thanks for the fabulous comment Randy. You are a gem!
