Pastel on sanded paper (Colourfix burgundy). 35cm x 50cm
(1500 views – December 2010)

Tom Tehan was a highly respected member of the Seymour community and one of nature’s gentle-men! His family have lived in the Seymour area for very many years, and Tom has become quite a legend. This portrait was painted as a tribute to Tom and displayed at the Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society Show several yeas ago. Tom is a past President of that organisation, as well as many other community organisations.

(Tom Tehan passed away (aged 99!) on the 28th April, 2009, and on 6/5/09 the whole front page of our local paper was devoted to an article about his life. This painting was featured in that article).

If I were this gentleman, I would be very flattered by this portrait. It shows a kind and gentle soul with the strength only a man from the country can usually show in his face. Regards, Heather

  • Thanks Heather. Tom was really thrilled with this painting, and he bought it. Now tell me, is Col a member of the Heathcote Artistists Inc.????

Your portraits are far better than many so-called Royal artists in the UK. Do you find for some obscure reason that pastels are undervalued compaired with oils by some uninlightened folk?

  • Hi Brian – I just discovered I put a reply to one of your comments in the wrong box and I don’t know how long ago I stuffed up, so you must think I am so rude not to have answered you! I have copy/pasted it into the right box now, so here it is……

Oh great comment Brian! I don’t know whether the word is ‘undervalued’, but I think pastel is under-rated as a medium. I don’t know why. It has so much to commend it. A pastel painting will never change; the colours will be the same in a million years, whereas oil tends to yellow with age, and watercolour tends to fade.

    Wonderful portrait Lynda
You have certainly raised my appreciation of pastels

  • Thanks Mike – Not a good photo of it because it was with my old camera! I am so glad your appreciation of pastels has risen. A lot of artists use pastel here, but watercolour, acrylic and oil still seem to be the most popular mediums.
