Artist's Description

Pastel on Mi Teinte Tex Paper (Cobalt Blue) 75cm x 55cm approx.

I visited this place last November, where I made some sketches and took some reference photos. It is located close to Whitfield in the North of Victoria, Australia and overlooks the King Valley – a prominent wine area of the state.

“Power’s Look Out” is named after one of Victoria’s most infamous bushrangers, Harry Power, and this location provides a comprehensive view of the properties below. Power, also known as Henry Johnstone used the various outcrops in this location to watch over the Valley and any approaching police patrols.

During his bushranging career he committed over 30 crimes and was also known to have taught the teenage Ned Kelly how to conduct his robberies and to elude the police in the bush. Power was born in 1819 in Ireland and was transported to Tasmania in 1840 for stealing a pair of shoes. When he was released he travelled to Victoria where he built on his career. He spent a total of 30 years, during his lifetime of 72 years, in gaol.
