Portrait of Graeme

Pastel on Colourfix sanded paper (burgundy) – 50cm x 35cm
(Painted entirely with soft pastel and blended with fingers)

Straight from my easel to RedBubble!!!! I have been slogging away at this portrait for the past 3 days and had definite intentions of ripping it up and starting all over again! When I left my studio on Saturday and strolled through the gloom of the bush to get home I was feeling quite despondent, but when I looked at it again with fresh eyes on Sunday it wasn’t too bad after all! So I soldiered on with the ‘assistance’ of Mervyn (my pet cockatoo) for company in my studio. He turned a piece of Colourfix into papier mache behind my back, crept up the leg of my easel and snaffled a pastel, and added some more details to his ‘work in progress’ beak carving (he is using one of my floorboards as his ‘medium’ for this masterpiece)!

Anyhow – this is the chap that does the statistics during my son’s footy matches, and I promised his wife I would do his portrait one day, and the day has come! The leather hat and the Drizabone coat had to be included. I hope he likes the final result. I’m happy with it.

What a superb portrait Lynda. I can see this being featured before too long. This chap has a rugged appearance with a lot of character, and you portrayed him superbly. I raise a toast to you dear. Warm regards, Ron

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Many thanks Ron. I just sent you a bmail.

  • FailingMemory

    FailingMemory

You would have to be good to get a photograph as good as this, for detail or personality.

  • Lynda Robinson replied

I will try to get a photo of him with the painting when I give it to him next weekend! What is your real name FailingMemory? (Or have you forgotten it LOL)!

  • Jim Phillips

    Jim Phillips

I know he’ll be happy with it. This is perfection Lynda. The details in the beard alone are fantastic. Excellent work.

  • Lynda Robinson replied

The BEST part was the beard Jim! I just had to use a few different colours of pastels and squiggle them around on their edge! Thanks for a great comment, and you are a good friend too!

  • mikebov

    mikebov

    stunning detail again here Lynda
The eyes are amazing, He is sure to be pleased.
Love the detail in the beard, Are you using Bill’s technique of an old toenail clipping

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks Daisy! I have a better technique than Bill’s toenail clippings! I get Mervyn in a head lock and scrape his claws over the freshly applied pastel!!!!

  • Edzie

    Edzie

This is perfect Lynda! Isn’t it funny how we will look at a work and think “this is cra@!” and want to tear it up, (the ultimate win!) but soldiering on usualy gives terrific results.
He looks like a real character. Yeah, we need to see a photo of him being presented with himself!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Hiya Wayne – Will definitely get a photo of him with himself! Watch this space!!!!!!

  • Mrswillow

    Mrswillow

Wishing you a wonderfully creative week!Sx

  • Lynda Robinson replied

  • Simon Aberle

    Simon Aberle

    Its fantastic Lynda!
The colours and expression on his face is divine!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thank you for a great comment Simon. My resident critic (Pete) told me he was too fat in the face at one stage, but I didn’t believe him at the time. However, he was (infuriatingly) right, so I gave him a bit of a facelift and suddenly there he was!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thank you very much Linda deary. I was very pleased with how the titfer turned out. I DID give Merv a lump of wood hoping that would keep him occupied, but as soon as he had turned it into woodchips he was working on the floorboard again!

LOL…

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks for a great comment Linda. Yes, it did come close to being fodder for Mervyn’s beak on a couple of occasions, but I am pleased with the final outcome. Funny how some things are a slog and others come easy isn’t it?

looks great, youve captured a good character here, portaits can be so frustrating at times, ive been slaving away on a portrait(in oils) for over a month now, I cant wait to see the back of it, wish id done it in pastels, id be finished by now!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

It’s amazing how just the teeniest little ‘flick’ can make a huge change to the whole expression isn’t it? I felt like I had ‘lost’ this completely several times. I want to see your oil when it’s finished Maria! (The front of it, not the back of it – LOL)!

  • Irene Burdell

    thepaintedsoul

Okay Lynda. . . you are flat out shaming me with these portraits of yours. They all are incredible. And this one is just another gem in the gallery. You have a way of conveying people’s personalities so well. One of the most striking features of your work is your ability to balance the cool and the warm tones in an image. This one is particularly good at bringing those opposites together. You’ve really woven together such harmony. And as so often happens in your portraits – the eyes have it. They have that life you look for in a portrait. Okay. I know it sounds like I’m sucking up. I don’t mean to be. You just have to understand, I’ve been away from the Bubble a LONG TIME and I’m glad to come see what my friends here are doing. And I’m thrilled to see how well everyone is progressing. Have a great one! Cheers! the Yank

  • Lynda Robinson replied

    Joanna Whitton

That’s so good – I love pastel portraits. I’m trying to teach myself pastels – did you have lessons, or figure it out yourself?

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks Joanna. In answer to your question I figured it out myself! Over the years I’ve read lots of books too, but I came to the conclusion that the more you hear and read about ‘rules’ regarding how you should use any particular medium for art, the more you realise that there are no rules! If I can be of any help to you with your pastelling send me a bubblemail, and I will do the best I can to assist!

This is first class work my friend. How on earth did you manage to make the beard so lifelike?

  • Lynda Robinson replied

The beard was the BEST fun Dave! I just used several different tones of pastel and squiggled and scribbled them around with a ‘rolling’ motion using the pastel edge. Thanks for a great comment my friend.

  • LTScribble

    LTScribble

are u kidding me…..how can u be dispondent to this…it’s wonderful…..shoot i should just throw my pencils away now…..i love the color pastels…I couldn’t get them to act right…...1… they are to light…2..they have no fine pointed ends for details…..just big hunks of chalk…..But u…U took this medium to an incredible level…....(i’m just blown away)

  • Lynda Robinson replied

I am so sorry for the delay in response to this wonderful comment! I DID reply (14 days ago) but I put it in the ‘comment’ box instead of the ‘reply’ box – I have copied and pasted it to where it should be, so now you will know that I said…............

Thank you Mr. LT Scribble!!! What a fabulous comment you have left me, and I really appreciate it. I have just read your ‘dragon’ story! Fabulous! It is great to have ‘determination’ and your work is really beautiful, so no need to throw your pencils away!!! (Ha ha)! Re: pastels, what do you mean they are too light? Also once you I started mucking around with them I found that you don’t need pointy ends – you can use their ‘top edge’ for fine detail or use them on their side. I also use pastel pencils for really fine detail, but not very much as they don’t have the same colour intensity as soft pastels. Thanks again for a great comment. Very very much appreciated.

I am Graeme, the subject of Lynda’s superb pastel portrait.
Firstly, Lynda I must apologise that it has taken so long to post any comment – I have no computer skills at all.. Marg is sending this on my behalf.

Lynda has once again showcased her immense artistic talent. Whether it be subjects like seaside or country scenes (we own a couple of her landscapes), portraits or animals, the variety of mediums she uses – they are all fantastic!
We are absolutely delighted with the portrait. I feel it has great depth and has captured me in every aspect. From my 30 year old hat, to my eyes, my facial expression and my beard (I’m afraid my white / grey beard shows my age…) OR… (I was hoping my beard wouldn’t have come across as so grey and white, showing my age…) and also my well-worn driazabone. I have had comments from family and friends such as ‘the eyes seem to follow you”, “it’s so life-like I was waiting for it to speak to me”, “it’s you to a tee”. And from all the comments on Redbubble, it’s obvious a lot of people think the same!
Lynda, thanks immensely for taking the time to produce such a masterpiece. It will always remain a treasured possession of mine and of my family. Heartfelt thanks again. Graeme x

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Wow – this is so amazing!!!! Thanks Graeme (and Margaret). This must be about the BEST comment I’ve ever received!!! You have made my RedBubble week! It was just the way the light was catching your beard that made it look ‘grey’ – I have to announce to the world that Graeme’s beard is really JET BLACK with only a few glints of grey!!!!

It swells me with pride having become a ‘friend’ of yours lately! Incredible skill and talent, you are an awesome artist! G :-) X

Maybe you are drawn to this because of the name, (despite the different spelling! LOL)! I do apologise for the delay in reply, but I only just found your incredible comment. The process was fairly scary as I kept worrying I would muck it up, but the beard was sheer joy and great fun.
