Rocks along the Goulburn

Rocks along the Goulburn

Pastel on Colourfix paper (burgundy) 35cm x 50cm

I hi-jacked this painting from the wall of my very good friend Sandra Wilson (Mrswillow on Redbubble) yesterday so that I could take a photograph. She very kindly bought this at a solo exhibition I held in 2005! (My Easel and Eye at Heathcote Winery)

The river was rushing along fairly quickly at the time I did the painting, and the water was quite clear, so it was a challenge to depict the movement and the clarity of the water.

Is access to this part of the river on private property? I am searching for different spots along the river so i can take photos.

  • Lynda Robinson replied

It is on Ekberg’s property, so yes, it is private property, but I think it is accessible. Will send you a bubblemail….

Is it pastel? Unbelievable, so much life like, how could achieve that water fowing effect? Amazing and amusing at the same time! You should title it as WOW painting!!! I have yet to come across such a masterpiece in pastel…

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Well that is a WOW of a comment Arnene. Yes it is pastel. Effect is achievable by a lot of squiggles and smudges, trial and error, and sometimes stamping and shouting helps!!!! Swaying around in front of the easel to nice music is also quite effective!!!!!

Another great piece Lynda!!! So much detail and clarity. Color choices are stunning!!! Do you pastel pencils for detailing? I use Derwent pastel pencils but would like to find a better grade and a little smaller for better detailing. Just wondered if you used them, what brand you use? Love this amazing piece!!!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Hi Linda and thanks for a wonderful comment. I do use the Derwent pastel pencils but fairly infrequently. Mainly for a few finer details in portraits or for whispy tree branches. I find them a bit too ‘hard’. I use those paper rolled up sticks for blending sometimes too. There are some pencils called ‘Prismacolour’ that I have heard a lot of American people referring to on RB. I have been looking out for them (without luck so far) as would like to try them.

we are spoilt 2 wonderful pastel paintings loaded for us to devour….this one is so full of movement..that river is moving fast and has such a lovely flow to it…:-) love the depth to it and the colours are gorgeous…another winner Lynda!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks Linda (incidentally, did you happen to notice there is yet ANOTHER Linda above??). Thanks for a great comment. I have been busy in the studio for a couple of days. Have you been getting any painting done?

  • Linda Bennett

    Linda Bennett

I agree Lynda, the Derwent are a little hard to work with mainly because of the size and texture. I bought the Prismacolor Pencils and may incorporate them into the sketch I’m currently working on. I bought mine online at the Utrecht website. The prices there are alot better. it will be the first time I’ve used them so not really sure what I’m doing..lol!! Hopefully I can master them quickly!!!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks for the information Linda. Let me know how you get on with them as I would be interested to see what you think. I will browse around a few of the websites in Aus and see if I can find them here.

You done an amazing job with the water. Even before I read your comment about this pastel painting I could see that the water was flowing very quickly. Did you do this plain air? I have a feeling you did. Wonderful job!!! Outstanding. Cheers Esther

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks for a lovely comment Esther. I actually did this one from a photo that I took after I sitting and watching the flow of the water for a very long time. I used some artistic licence with the trees, adding similar tones as I used for the rocks. I think I would probably do it quite differently now and would be a bit more adventurous with the colours.

Go to Blurb.com…it’s easy…you do it all on line by dragging your images in to the templates of your choice and they do the rest for you, printing binding etc…then you can offer it for sale through the bookstore there or just do it for yourself, family and friends….I wish RB would offer this service…

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks for that Janis. I will have a look. I have done things on a similar sounding site called ‘Snapfish’. Got some of my images made into coasters and calendars, just for little Chrissy gifts for family and friends.
