High Country Giant

Pastel on Colourfix paper (burgundy) – 70cm x 50cm

In this country (Australia) the trees lose their bark instead of their leaves! Weird eh? As the bark peels away it reveals beautiful patterns and exposes amazing colours in the trunks of many varieties of eucalypt. This is a Red Gum. I found this beautiful tree during a trip to the Howqua River, which is near Mansfield, Northern Victoria (a mountainous area known as the High Country) when my husband took me on a hair raising 4-wheel drive excursion into the bush! It is obviously a very ancient tree and I enjoyed this painting very much.

You are always good for a laugh Lord S! You would look good in a plumed hat, but I might struggle to find a puddle here, so you are safe!

I know the track he took you on lol Up from the Howqua river to the Slate mine & down to Mitchell Flats I bet! lol We did that trip too in the middle weekend of January! Fancy them going all the way up there for slate & carting it all the way back down and in the days of Horse & Cart too! They were nuts!!!!

    Awesome artwork again!
    Chookas! X♥X

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Do you know Alyssa, I think you are RIGHT! Mitchell Flats is sounding familiar! We got stuck behind a 4WD group because someone had done something to their ‘axle’ (secret men’s business to me)! We got around them, over rocks and bumps and sheer drops into nowhere on my side! I just covered my eyes and prayed in the end! They were nuts!

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks Linda – It was great fun doing those little nooks and crannies that were catching the light on the tree trunk! Just little light touches with the edge of a very soft pastel! I still owe you an email – I haven’t forgotten!

Other-worldly and scrumptious at the same time! Love it. Love the texture – the directness of your approach. You really activated the painting with those pastel strokes movement and color. You are so talented. . . just had to drop by to make a comment and let you know I’m slowly going crazy with the CD, but that your work settles out my restlessness. Keep up the fab work my friend. Hope you’re staying well in the land of the scary snakes!!!!! Cheers!

ENORMOUS Smile! Thank you so much for the feature Owlspook! It is just the way of the world as far as eucalypts are concerned that they lose their bark, but they keep their leaves!!!! There are many species of eucalypts and they are truly magnificent trees!!!

  • owlspook

    owlspook

you’re most welcome, Lynda (big smile) .... truly unusual tree (big smile) ... did you know that at least one species of eucalypts grows quite well on the coast of oregon? ... surprised me .. always thought of it as only growing in some place like the tropics (grin) ...

    fascinating work and description!
in America, we have Paper Birch that loses its bark and is wonderful for art crafts,
i love to paint on the bark, the texture gives wonderful visual impressions which influence the subject of my paintings. i love learning ~ thank you for your wonderful description.
Your painting is gorgeous! fantastic work

  • Lynda Robinson replied 8 days ago

Thanks for a great comment KB! As a matter of fact the bark of the eucalypt is used in ‘bark painting’. The various colours of bark are cut into suitable pieces to use the bark as the ‘paint’ to make pictures!

  • K Bock

    K Bock 8 days ago

i believe it! i saw Rainbow Eucalyptus trees on the island of Maui last May, and i love LOVE them! they are so gorgeous.
You can also cut the bark into strips and weave into baskets.
i like to do that and add some different types of barky bark LOL
you know stips that have a really woody texture in rows intermittent with the paper bark. then perhaps reeds or some other plant for the handle, and mossy plants also look lovely mixed inbetween.
or you can cut the bark into really narrow strips and weave into Holiday tree ornaments!
