'Harbour Lights - Apollo Bay'

Pastel on Colourfix sanded paper (burgundy) – 50cm x 35cm
(872 views as at 5/12/09)

My first painting completed in 2009!

Apollo Bay is a beautiful fishing village along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. We spend a week there each year, and it is nearly time for us to head back there again. The harbour is really beautiful at dusk. I did a couple of colour sketches sitting on the edge of the harbour on this balmy summer evening, just as the lights were starting to come on. I also took some photos for later reference.

Hot off the easel and it sizzles. . .glad you were able to finish this piece up.

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Oh great Michael! It is quite a relief that you think it sizzles! I value your opinion. I was sorta happy half way through, and then by the end I was unhappy! The composition was bothering me. Too much water?

No way Lynda. The waterline is approximately 2/3s of the way up the painting and I think that makes the comp really interesting. The boats anchor (no pun intended) the comp, too. Wonderful rhythm throughout the image. RELAX, eh. : >D

  • Lynda Robinson replied

    O.K. – I’m relaxed!

  • Linda Callaghan

    Linda Callaghan

this is lovely Lynda – and I agree with Michael the waterline is perfect… it is calming and leads the eye up to the rest of the painting. Also a great warmth to the water with the light hitting it.

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Thanks Linda. Why do we get so insecure? It is great to get others opinions and I really value yours.

Beautiful painting Lynda. It has a atmospheric quality about it. It has hints of Monet to me.

A impressionistic representationalism about it. Keep up the good work.

I have to admire the twinkle lights in background with the illusion that I’m really seeing “stuff” back there.

  • Lynda Robinson replied

Hi Randy – yes, it’s all just scribbled colours and suggestion at the back! Different blues with a few swooshes of red, hint of a rooftop here and there, hint of trees and then just bright blobs to suggest lights!
