'Hot Day at Tarcombe'
Pastel on terracotta Colourfix sanded paper – 50cm x 70cm
The subject with the painting!
During a painting trip to the Tarcombe area of Victoria I met this chap working sheep in his stockyards. It was a very hot day and the intense Australian light was reflecting the red dirt of the yards onto the khaki shirt. The colours in the shirt and battered terry towelling hat intrigued me, particularly the shadow colours. I was very happy with the resulting painting, and so was he – he bought it when he saw it displayed in a local art show.

Wow, you are a very talented lady! And, self taught, amazing!
Lee Wilde
Lynda Robinson replied
Thank you Lee. I am very new to Red Bubble, so am only just working out how to navigate my way around and what groups are available. It is wonderful that you have made my work a ‘feature’ and I am very flattered.
Hidemi Tada
stunning portraiture Lynda. i have never saw such a detail expression on beard and hair on the arm. And also color is excellent.
Lynda Robinson replied
Thank you Hidemi. (I am a big fan of all your work too). I have a LOT OF FUN doing portraits and there are so many colours in hair and beards. It is very exciting when a ‘likeness’ gradually emerges from the page. I get such a lot of joy from art. Have a lovely day.
Michael Jones
OMG you can feel the heat from here, great work, love it
Lynda Robinson replied
Thanks Fringedweller. It WAS a hot day. I really enjoyed all the colours in the khaki shirt and the sharp light/shade contrasts which I think maybe only occur in this wonderful country. I just had a quick swoop through your work and I can relate to it so well!!! I can see you have also captured the unique Aussie light!
Michael Jones
I think that this is the only country where the light is so laser like, I find that trying to paint northern hemisphere light is very frustrating for me, as I have become accustomed to seeing the colours so vividly now. when I go back to the UK, the colours seem so dull. so when I paint images from my UK pics I really have to ramp up the colour. thanks for looking at my stuff, glad you liked it. cheers…M
Marlene Piccolin
Lynda, this is incredible. It’s very detailed but still looks like a painting. I am in awe of people who can do this with pastel. One of these days, I’m going to get out the pastels I inherited from my late father-in-law and give them a try. But how do you get a painting like this with those stubby chalks?!! I think I’d like this guy.
Lynda Robinson replied
Hello Marlene – thank you very much for your extremely kind comments. Those ‘stubby chalks’ are merely extensions of your fingers. You can use the edges or the sides, or just scribble colours on and then blend them with your fingers or paper stumps! Do have a play with them and you will see the endless potential. Hint: Take the wrapping paper off and break them into smaller pieces!
BarbBarcikKeith
Such life and color! Fantastic work..
Now, tell me.. do you ever use pastel pencils? I use both the sticks and pencils and it makes quite a difference in the detail (not that you need any help at all in the department!).. just an idea..
Lynda Robinson replied
Thanks for your comments Barb. Yes I DO use pastel pencils in combination with the pastel sticks, but only in portraiture or for fine detail in something like raindrops (in my eucalypt leaf series of paintings). I find them a bit too hard for anything else.
Linda Ridpath
wonderful image lynda, you are so talented and your capture of classic australians is so good.
sunrender

This is superb. The shadows and details are so realistic.
Lynda Robinson replied
Thank you Colin. I won a couple of awards with this painting, and the subject liked it enough to purchase it so it has been very lucky for me. Sorry for the delay in reply. Just realised I’ve been answering in the wrong boxy thing!

baxfly
Lynda, your work is wonderful. I love pastel and I’ve just started working with it myself. I’m thinking of taking a class, until then I’ll just have fun experimenting.
Lynda Robinson
Hi Baxfly. I am sure you will have fun experimenting and discovering the endless possibilities with this under-rated medium! Let me know how you go, and if I can give you any hints I will be more than happy to help. I had a look at your portfolio and, although it only contains ‘Nannette’ at the moment, it looks as if you have mastered pastel pretty well already! Thank you for your very kind comment.
ImagesFX
very nice work…...love it
mscholl21
Wow! Just fantastic!
Lynda Robinson replied
Thank you Michael – Yeah, I really enjoyed this painting. The light on this day was quite laserlike, and it happens a lot here I think. The Australian atmosphere (particularly away from the city) is extremely clear an unpolluted. It makes colours ‘sing’ out really loud, and sometimes I feel like I over-exaggerate the colours, but I know they are what I see! Weird eh?
Brian Towers
Such fantasic work! Virtually each passage has me speachless – not a common result for me. The way you have the sunlight skipping over his arm alone is so perfectly done.
Lynda Robinson replied
Thank you Brian. You say the nicest things!!! Some paintings just leap onto the page, whilst others are a struggle. This one leapt onto the page!!!
mikebov
superb , wonderful depth the guy could walk straight out of the canvas
