To answer the “Why” question, it’s because he’s about to trip and fall flat on his face. That’s a stride made for stumbling. Or, if he makes it, and doesn’t fall over, he’s going to yank her off the darned thing, if he grabs hold of her hand. She doesn’t have the strength to support him, unless, maybe she’s a vampire. In which case, it’s late because she’s “the late ” as in “the dearly departed”
Mostly, it’s that he’s about to fall, and then he’ll never catch up, methinks.
Yes, I know, it’s presumptuous and passing strange that I answer the question about a work that is not my own, but, it’s how I see it.
And, this is, as always, beautiful!
