The Art of Killing Naked Roses
Aesthetically their petals and stems allure us,
draw us into the soil of their beds.
Content to see the sky through
the shades and colours and hues of their beauty
we stay. But we darker ones
need to unravel and expose
any fruit sweeter
than the tastes of our previous victories.
But, like the Sun, we shine;
at least on the outside – magnetic -
and that is the purpose of the bait:
to garner, sometimes cultivate
an interest beyond reasoning.
When as time passes to reveal less of us
the flower sways ever so slightly from itself
to lean into us (we, of all things) for protection
from the very storm that we provoke,
and in our cradling we can not resist
to pluck a petal or two from the beauty
to see what it is our wickedness exposes
as we practice the art
of killing naked roses.
