We have him.The Craven One.
My Wolf and I have folded time and space for one Moon rise to reach this place, this infertile ground on the edge of the world.
Grey dust explodes around our feet as we pace towards him. He is standing on an outcrop of black rock. He is silhouetted against the rising sun, watching and marking our dogged advance. He steps down and strides across the dead landscape, sending more clouds of noxious dust into the heavy air. I raise my sword and am surprised when he continues to walk straight into the point. I shift my weight and press it into to his breast bone
I stare into his hazel eyes and trace the planes of his face, for memory’s sake. He utters the three words he thought would save him from his Doom.
“I love you..”
I throw myself against my sword with all my weight. As it pierces his chest with a violence that surprises me, tears cascade down my cheeks. I struggle to drag air past the tightness in my throat. Our faces so close, I watch the green fire flicker and fade from his eyes.
" I love you.." I breathe into his gaping mouth.
I feel the steel bands around my throat shift and move to my ribs, strangling my beating heart. They encase my pain and lock it deep.
At the cost of my humanity, I am now, truly, my Red Queen’s, my Mother’s Daughter
