farewell at The Wave
My wife had cordially begun the hike back, allowing me to linger at The Wave. Looking over the shoulder of Wave, the darkening distance convinced me, that I too must leave this location – and the moment.

Beautiful photo! It is easy to see why your time was cut short, those are some very threatening clouds moving in! Excellent work!
Jan Timmons
Life is but a series of moments of joy; seeing this shot is one of them. Love the colors and pov. I followed you here after reading an articulate comment. Did you study art or literature?
LumenLux replied
Well Jan, your comment means a lot to me. Brings a sure smile. Feels good. The real truth is instead of writing this, I “should” be completing someone’s tax return! But I have enjoyed photography my entire life. And although I consider my heart as my primary audience, it really makes me feel good to know that another heart can share some of the beauty and feelings I experience. Thank you.

This shot is amazing the lighting is perfect in the foreground allowing you to see the many layers that the rock is made of and after reading your back story of the imminent weather change draws you toward your dark but beautiful backround of canyon and sky Wonderful image!
budrfli
Wonderful perspective of this graceful formation!
chriso
Great contrast of lines and texture – love it.

Gorgeous composition! The beauty of nature is so powerful! Amazing work! Thanks for sharing! It almost feels as if our ancestors were talking to you in this shot with the weather coming on and the beauty and fathom of the weathered rocks! Very spiritual!

Where is the Wave? Thanks for sharing the image, looks like a place I should visit to continue my sandstone series started at Arches…
LumenLux
Thank you everyone for expressing your appreciation for this work. Beyond confirmation of my own “likes”, the comments can open my eyes and bring new insight beyond what I saw. Thanks again.
As to “Where is the Wave?” – just south of the Utah-Arizona border in USA. Access is in the hands of the BLM and restricted to 20 visitor/hikers a day. (Political commentary abounds regarding the resource.)

I have seen so many images of the wave. I like yours best with the contrast of the dark sky and rock formation. Stormy weather can be fine weather for the landscape photographer.
LumenLux replied
Thank’s chris. Several years ago I saw a single photo of The Wave and said WHERE is that? Then seeing so many pix of it, I opted for many other locations. Then I saw photos by a particular photographer that motivated me to experience the Wave. I love the experience even if I did not have the camera. I thought I was going to the Wave a year ago, but the group decided on a 26 mile slot-canyon-river-trek-in-a-day! I knew it would be too emotionally painful for me to rush through such scenery and compromise every photo op I encountered. So it took another year to get a permit and patient accomplice (wife) so I could “get the shot.”
Barbara Brown
A beautiful, almost surrealistic take on the wave. Great perspective!
Adrian Kent
Wow, You lucky person being close to something like that! Its awesome and so,s your shot, only ever seen stuff like that in caves!
Andrew Murrell

beautiful .lines colour and composition…..

Magnificent moving shot. It’s the first time I’ve seen the Wave. Where is it please?
Tammy Espino
Fantastic capture and colors!!
DJ LeMay
It looks as tho you can see the striations in the rock in the background THRU the rock in the foreground! Such a beautiful with the light ‘n dark contrast! Marvelous composition!
LumenLux
Thanks to each of you for your comments. For example, DJ LeMay points out aperception I had not realized until now. People in seeing the print had noted the horizontal pattern of red against the dominant diagonal lines. I had to re-focus my vision to see what you, DJ, point out. True enough, it can look that way.

truly magnificent photo – now back to those tax returns! – thanks for the comments on my photos – I lived in Salt Lake for 8 years
- and wish now that I had a good camera back then -a beautiful state and you are capturing it very well – daveLumenLux replied
You un-nerved me for a minute about the tax returns. I had just been writing an alibi or rationalization to go with another photo I was emailing to some photog friends. It did not initially occur to me how you would know that about me! So when did you live here among the mountains in this desert? Back to The Wave – there was a comparatively small section of sweeping dunes just prior to the hidden wave. Not a camel in sight.
David Clark
Sorry to un-nerve you
- I thought it was funny that you were making excuses not to do tax-returns -I live overseas – and still waiting for the mail to deliver all the info I need to do mine- so it is on the top[ of my head -I lived in Utah from 1980-88 – Montana after that, then recently Idaho – so know that part of the world fairly well.cheers (guess I can say that know with Utah’s new law)—dave

You are all so generous, thank you. Some locations fall short after over-anticipation and high expectations. On this occasion, everything seemed right on target. One of those special days.

Great shot! I have seen a lot of this feature never one like this! Great find! I have to go there some day I hear you have to get on a waiting list now! Thats crazy,
LumenLux replied
Thanks for your attention to this view. Yes, there is a permit system in place – essentially lottery-based either in advance on the web or in person for next-day permits. Although the system is widely criticized, it is also clear that there could be no photographs like this if “crowds” of people scurried everywhere.
