buy this, pollute the earth. T-Shirt

buy this, pollute the earth.

Everything that is created and every idea evolves from somewhere, and that somewhere doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the final destination, this is just a shirt with a pattern on it, and the pattern can mean a thousand things beyond one point, and not stating something it may or may not mean doesn’t mean that ‘it doesn’t or does mean it’.
.
I was reading yet another another article on some fancy new telescope that assisted us in being able to see stars form in the galaxy around the time of the Big Bang, if there ever was a Big Bang, and I remembered how I used to love this stuff, but now I think it’s time we accepted how our view up has increased our awareness of our own vulnerability and we thought about looking down at least as much. The nearest star (apart from the sun) is about 4.2 light years away, which would take about 90,000 years to get to in Voyager 2. So we’re not getting there anytime soon. At present we appear to be destroying this planet, and aware of it, so really that’s a lot like suicide. Priorities people.

The blade is made of an image of the oldest galaxy we’ve found, and I stencilled it so I could use paint drips rather than blood. I’m trying to avoid blood these days.

And I’m no astronomer, if my information is incorrect please blame the internet as a whole for lying. And go and ask this man, Mr Dave Pearson who actually does know what he is talking about and to whom I dedicate this tee and my new thoughts about it.

    Ah yes…. Hell yes.
I can`t tell you how much this impresses me.

The graphic itself is clear and strong, as is the message behind it all.

That and I`m a big fan of some paint splatter..

    No.

You can’t go uploading two tees in one day of this calibre. It’s simply not the done thing. Where are your manners man ?

The universe is an intruiging thing, I understand what you’re saying about priorities, but astronomers wouldn’t make good farmers. And besides, they are searching for our nearest escape route, or some aliens with an all-in-one ozone hole repairing, carbon emission reducing, greenhouse gas removing, lazerbeam positron ion cannon rescue package.

    It’s possible.

Aha, indeed, look I’m not swinging a blow at astronomer, it’s a metaphor. There’s an article in The Age this very morning about a chap who’s spending 3 million to go into space, the whole mission is hundreds of millions of dollars, as far as I can tell the answer is not ‘out there’ and even if it is it’s not happening very soon, whereas what is going on down here, could well happen very soon.

Ooohhh! At first glance I was like, ’ Oh wow, it’s so simple yet so cool!’ But then when I looked over at the detail on the right, I realized that it’s so much more than just an awesome design – it’s a very big statement about a very complex issue. I should have expected it, though, since you are so good at that stuff :)
I agree with you 100% by the way. My boyfriend and I are both huge nerds and we talk about this stuff a lot.
I like that the outer paint splatters just look like paint splatters at first, but then when you realize there’s a whole galaxy in that razorblade they look more like stars spilling out :)

Interesting idea. Although I think it’s unfortunate that you’d suggest there’s a matter of priorities that has the study of the universe at one end and the perceived well-being of the planet at the other. It seems like a bit of a false dichotomy to me.

Moreover, looking and studying has nothing to do with getting there. In daily life I don’t make a point of only looking at, appreciating or photographing (for example) those things I can walk up to and touch. If I took that attitude I wouldn’t care about all the parts of this planet I’ll never get to.

On top of all of this: astronomy is one of the few areas of study that can really help you appreciate just how unique this planet is.

Of all the things that could be presented as being in “opposition” to caring for this planet…

  • Lucan Industries (© misterkhan 1995)

    Lucan Industri...

Aha, Mr Pearson, I’m amazed that it took so long for someone to stand against this, I was waiting from the off. I agree entirely, which is why I said slightly higher up in the comments that it was metaphorical, that ultimately it has nothing to do with actually stopping looking up, or a even a call for astronomers to start researching solar power and eating organic food, in fact it has nothing to do with them at all, but merely an observation that we spend all our times ‘discovering’ things, like new shoes that make you run faster, and kettles that look better than other kettles, when really we have a big situation glaring at us in the face.
The elephant in the room if you will.
It has absolutely nothing to do with astronomy whatsoever, it was merely a catalyst for me and a way of transcribing a thought. Most visual art rarely has anything to do with what you can actually see.
Not that I’m calling this art, it’s a t-shirt, with a stencil on, that might make someone cycle to work if I’m very lucky.
I also agree with you that studying the galaxies helps us realise just how unique we really are, I did some work with Deep Ecology on the solar system, using it as an example of the vulnerability of Earth. However I would say that we know enough right now to act upon a serious situation down here, and when we have it sorted we can dust off our scopes again. Metaphorically.
    Thank you for playing.

  • Dave Pearson

    Dave Pearsonbeta tester

Metaphorically, we can carry on using our ‘scopes and do other stuff. While the time spent on housekeeping and wandering outside to look at the wider world (metaphorically) might be a zero-sum game in some respects (time being one obvious zero-sum variable), it doesn’t have to require that (metaphorically) we spend all our time dusting and cleaning (or manufacturing t-shirts whose shipping around the world will make the problem worse).

    I love the title!

  • Dave Pearson

    Dave Pearsonbeta tester

Well, I’m not convinced by the title, but I think the addition to the work’s description totally misses the point about debating concepts and metaphors.

    Kind of a shame really.

  • Lucan Industries (© misterkhan 1995)

    Lucan Industri...

Aha, well the title is just a good old fashioned piece of good humour, and as for totally missing my own point, I’d like to add that debating concepts is my thing generally, not debating top level metaphor. But I’m happy to do both, but not on the interweb.
I doubt people stood around Hirst’s ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ and discussed sharks. In fact they probably just ate ice cream and complained about the smell. But nonetheless I accept the point gracefully and would say that this is how I debark on debates on the internet because I think it’s a fucking useless tool for debate because words are inert and really one needs to be in person, so I do my best to insert my own special brand of dryness into it all and respond in ways that I’m allowed. But clearly it’s all a massive joke, this is a playground for people whose bosses don’t watch them closely enough at work, who have expensive digital cameras and think that makes them photographers, or who have just found the filter drop down in PhotoCock #9103, this is not the place for serious debate, in fact I’d say it was dangerous. If one really wished to spark debate in the world one wouldn’t upload a half arsed shirt to the net to get lost in the other 826,63598,138,346,335,2,5,6,7,78788554,,3335 shirts already there. One would probably go outside and talk to someone else. A dying art I fear.

But still, it can be an awful lot of fun.

LOL I Just saw your comment over at zazzle where you caught someone who had stolen the razor blade portion from this image. Great catch! Might I ask how you found out he had stolen your work? Don’t you hate assholes who do that? Kinda makes me wonder how much of “his” other work is stolen from others.

Anyway, love your gallery. great work ;)

  • Lucan Industri... replied

Well it was the mighty sjem who alerted me, he’d nicked some of his and some other redbubble people’s work. Then there was a big witch hunt and then he took it all down, after claiming a ‘friend’ had ‘given’ him the images.
