it came from a conversation between me and a friend of mine. I had a terrible primary school, so i was never taught basic (largely unused) maths like dividing leaving remainders. this is usually not a problem in A-level maths, but we were just learning the remainder theorem, which needed some knowledge of remainders (it appears to be a largely pointless theorem, except if you’re going to study one very specific part of maths at university.) so i was sorta behind. an admittance of this ignorance of remainders was met with “what!? what do you mean you don’t know what a remainder is?! thats like, not knowing what an ORANGE is.” hence the orange. remainders and similar simple mathematic principles were henceforth known as the ‘oranges of maths’.
on a slightly related note, my other friend has since been identified as not possessing the oranges of life. a sequel to the maths orange may soon be made for her.

Looks more like an orange pie … but yeah, the education system has a lot to answer for!
