Paddling through the pristine water at West Island, Cocos Islands.
A place where simplicity rules..no 5 star resorts, no marina, no traffic. Incredibly refreshing!

Sheer perfection Louise – this looks such a beautiful place and your image really does it justice, it is so perfectly composed and clean. I love the way the clouds balance out the composition as they meet the trees and the water gently laps the sands – it all comes together so wonderfully.

Beautiful Louise! You sure have an eye for a picture. But be careful Louise, paddling with all those reef sharks around.

The reason why there are no 5 star hotels is that this is actually a 10 star hotel, based on the assumption that a 5 star hotel makes you feel like a king. In this place I would feel like the emperor of the planet. There would be no need for sex or guitar playing or any other stimulus… to be on this beech, on the day you took this picture would be the ultimate mental and physical orgasm and everything else in the world would have to wait for me to come back down to reality. Thank you for finding this place for me and for writing me that gorgeous bubblemail that prompted me to get off my butt and visit your awesome portfolio. Now does this adequately describe what a diamond I think your are?
J.K. York

WHITE! – What took you to the Cocos Louise? I have always wanted to go since a friend came back raving about the place. Looks wonderful.
Louise Cooke replied
Hi Stephen, thanks for your kind words! Not surprised your friend came back raving :)
I’ve wanted to go there since I was a kid..my aunty and uncle lived there for a year in the early 70s..my aunty painted beautiful landscapes there and so Cocos was embedded in my child’s mind as this far away magical paradise. It lived up to all my expectations when I finally visited some 30 odd years later!
Stephen Colquitt replied
Its always great when you live out and realise your childhood dreams. I had a similar thing with Patagonia after reading about it in a book as a kid.
Louise Cooke
Thank you all for commenting – glad you’re sharing a bit of Cocos with me!
Jeremy Harrington
this is a fantastic shot Louise, such a perfect scene
jaffa
how clean and clear is that, i’d be afraid of making the place look untidy, beautiful pic.
David Sandercoe
I’d love to do one of my sand sculptures on this beach. Will you photo for me?....
............beautiful…...........
Louise Cooke replied
lol, yes David! Such a beach deserves one of your beautiful sculptures, but the tides stretch a long way in Cocos, so it could be a short life for your art!
helene ruiz
wish there were beaches like this in ny….beautiful
Karin Taylor

batjam
Great shot Louise. All of your Cocos photos are really stunning. I love the story of why you went. I spent two years on Cocos as a kid in the ealry 80’s and you have captured all the colour I remember as if it was yesterday. We were there when even tourism hadn’t reached the islands. When the only way to visit was to work there for the government or be invited by a resident. Congratulations!
Louise Cooke replied
Batjam that is so cool! Just love hearing from people who have been to Cocos – 2 years in the 80s, how awesome! Happy to say that tourism only low key there, so the masses haven’t destroyed the islands. Would you ever go back? Or maybe you wish to preserve your memories the way they are! Thanks for checking out my Cocos photos – so pleased you like them!
batjam
I would love to go back for a visit and to take some photos. The old ones have certainly seen better days. It would be strange and I image feel smaller than what it did 20yrs ago. Glad to hear tourism hasn’t spolit the island though. It was great there a a kid – absolute freedom. So many great places to explore. Thanks also for taking time to look at my photos. I am new to this so your feedback is great appreciated.
naureen
Just love the shots – I was directed to this site by batjam(daughter) and what she says is very true – these shots bring back many memories of our island life – I can almost smell that sea air again. Congratulations they are works of art! and I think batjams are fabulous as well (just love the animals)

Louise Cooke replied
