My new joy;- kefir. I was given kefir grains some time back – yep, I am talking way way back in September…., and I was in a scatty and wired state, head and heart all over the place…..and I ignored the poor wee grains. they languished in my fridge, smelling sour and looking less than appealing, with their dried out crusty cover of muslin held with rubber band, equally crusty……occasionally fed some milk and poked dubiously……I lost the instructions my friend gave me on how to care for them, and how to culture the kefir.
I didn’t understand the great gift I had been given, nor the custodial role that came with it…..and finally, this week, I thought I ought to take time, read up, and sort the poor things out. Hehe – a few days later I have everyone at my house (bar the 15 year old) drinking kefir a few times a day. I have grown to love the tangy, effervescent and creamy quality to kefir. It seems to be just what my body has been missing all these years! I have begun to regard the strange rubbery blobby ‘grains’ as little friends. They do indeed now swell with happiness at the care they are finally receiving and look fat and shiny and full of life. And no…its not a hallucinogen!
Soon I will have some to share….
