Eight Inches of Fabulous Phasmid by LouJay

Eight Inches of Fabulous Phasmid by

We aren’t blessed with visits from these stunning insects very often. I have seen 4 individuals in 7 years here in Pingelly – one was dead, one was wheaten coloured in response to the dryness of vegetation and 2 visited in the space of 8 hours last week!

The first was a magnificent individual I discovered on my curtain in my bedroom late at night – great fearsome wing display and vivid colouring. Then this slightly smaller fellow on the verandah the next morning – lucky not to be stepped on, as it was sluggish in the cool of the morning and not highly visible on the bricks.

Usually they are high in the Wandoo, nibbling on leaves and doing their best to look stickish. The sticky season seems to have made all the critters behave a bit differently.

I like to play. I find joy in small things and moments where the edge between conscious looking and subconscious seeing becomes soft enough for me to be there for a moment.

Oh, my gosh. Thanks for sharing. My first insect love as a kid was the preying mantis I saw in a science mag for kids. Swell presentation.

  • I love mantids too! Brainless tho’ they can be. So many I have rescued from spider’s webs, only to find them ensnared and expired in the morning…..Thank you lucin.

This is fabulous Lou….love the green ‘stick insect’ against that wonderfully textured and rustic setting. Great shot!
