I’ll pull you up,
you nasty weed!
You make me cough,
You make me sneeze
Quick before you set your seed
My skin you itch
My eyes you burn
Flaxleaf Fleabane,
Asthmaweed or Stinkweed

Quick before you set your seed.
Pull you up, you nasty weed
……….
Oh! But you are beautiful
like an undersea thing,
Delicate and intricate
Softly undulating
softly softly setting your seed….

Conyza bonariensis – Flaxleaf Fleabane
A weed that I can’t stand the feel or smell of, and the fine hairs are very irritant. The fleabanes are not so good for grazing animals, causing photosensitivity. But everything does have it’s own time of beauty, and this weed caught me, as things seem to do, before I was going to pull it up out the back of my work, on the way to the bin.

and no, I didn’t pull it up after all….!

About LouJay

I like to play. I find joy in small things and moments where the edge between conscious looking and subconscious seeing becomes soft enough for me to be there for a moment.

Swell shot and poem! Yes, you have made most lovely this nasty weed.

  • Thank you dear Lucin – it’s loveliness spoke to me in spite of my prejudice! How is that for beauty conquering all!

    neat shot and words, lou!

  • Thank you Nadine – you know, the better words came while I was at work as I was struck by the beauty of this nasty plant as I was about to pull it…and do you know, I should have written them down then, because they just weren’t the same later when I got home….bummer!

Lou, love your poem and beautiful image. You are right, everything does seem to have it’s own time of beauty.

  • Thank you Tori! I’m hoping for another (time of beauty – darn the last one finished when i was about 28!)

beautiful, Lou, and I agree with you about the smell (as a kid I always found this one annoying between my toes running around in the grass). Stinky and sticky too… You have shown us the beauty of it!

  • As it showed me – surprisingly!

    This is beautiful!!!! Weeds rock!!!!

  • They do – and the tenacity and adaptability of weeds are enviable and worth aspiring to! (‘When I grow up….I wanna be a weed!’:))
