My Last Meyer by LouJay

For the season.
Oh I miss my lemons when they are done
Woe to the sad need to purchase lemons from the other side of our very huge Earth.

Juicy, oh so juicy
Not quite the acid zing of Eureka,
Sweet, but with a little bitter twist that comes from the probable part orange or mandarin parentage of the Meyer.

Inspired to enter a challenge, and by the plucking of the last Meyer from my tree.

A square crop!

I like to play. I find joy in small things and moments where the edge between conscious looking and subconscious seeing becomes soft enough for me to be there for a moment.

a juicy slice, I lament also, that our tree has now only small green balls, for later…

  • I haven’t even got green balls yet! Such a dry spring, the citrus really suffered.

i mouth watered looking at this and reading your description…oh for a lemon tree!!!

  • What! No lemon tree!! Just what sort of Aussie are you?! lol. I love lemons of all sorts – and have 3 varieties – planning a little variety: ‘Lots-o-Lemons’ for my courtyard too!

I gave a Meyer lemon to my son in California — he loves it. Thanks for the reminder! If you planted a seed, you might (or might not) get something interesting 10 or 15 years from now…

  • It is so dry here, that waiting and watering the might or might not tree probably won’t happen! My poor citrus actually need to be relocated, as where they are has turned out to be an unexpected frost pocket! So next spring we will relocate some and just buy new ones of others and plant where we can direct our laundry grey water to them. Water is a big and expensive issue here in Western Australia.

this is perfect for the square crop!!
are they really sweet when they are fresh?
    excellent composition and wonderful narrative!

  • I’m not so great at responding it seems! A belated thank you, and yes, the Meyer is quite sweet when fresh. The ‘Lemonade’ lemon is even sweeter, which can be annoying when one is after that real zing of sour lemon…but lovely to drink!
