The Secrets Of Mother Earth by

Mixed Media on Terracotta Colourfix pastel paper 70cm x 50 cm 2012
Oil pastel, coloured pencil, iridiscent ink, acrylics, gold glitter, gold paint, crystals, embellishments.
Original not available. Private collection.

A lot of thought, inspiration & design went into this piece and I experimented with various mediums which worked together well.
I used a variety of mixed media as well as real opal crystals which were given to me by a friend years ago who found them at Lightning Ridge. It is interesting to note that opals were used by the Australian indigenous shamans in their dreamtime ceremonies. They are a perfect match for the painting.

The traditional colours of red, black & yellow of the Aboriginal people stands out in this painting which also depicts the fragility of Mother Earth, her hidden (masked) wisdom & the secrets of life, as she holds a precious drop of water & seed from the tree in her hand. The Boab tree represents female fertility & nourishment.

Grey & bronze hair flows out from her left (feminine) side, representing old age & wisdom. On her right side the masculine rainbow serpent seeks new paths of creation across the landscape. I have given this work a bit of an Art Nouveau feel for something different with some gold to portray the richness of youth & wealth of the earth.

This is really different than I accustomed to seeing from you, Louise. It’s an immediately captivating design.

  • Hi Fran – yes it is different for me. This was created especially for a competition – going with a particular theme & unique Australian flair. As I was drawing it up, the design seemed to change, so I went with it. I have had some ideas in mind for quite some time to use crystals in my work, so this is the start of something new & exciting for me.

What was originally going to be a pastel & watercolour work turned into a mixed media experimentation which flowed together beautifully. Instead of the soft pastels which are a favourite medium, I went back to oil pastels, which I used to paint with as a child…..even using some of those pastels I still have from many years ago – not to mention the beautiful iridescent pastels that are available now. As a result this work seems to change colour in the light.

Returning from a recent trip away to a different part of Australia has inspired my work to take a new direction lately, I was influenced by the landscape, trees & new experiences.
There is more of this type of work to come, I currently have another sketched up waiting to be completed.

Glad you like it, thanks for the fav;-)

This is a piece that evokes the mysteries of the Divine Mother and the gems of wisdom she may offer to those who seek her wisdom. Do you make the shaman’s journey yourself?

  • Many thanks Susan – yes
