Warrawillah Cattle: Westy, Bellyache & Mexican

Oils 36”x24” on canvas board (2006)
Commission – SOLD

This painting was a commission that took several months to complete. I took individual photos of the bull & the cows & combined them into this portrait. The background is actually the paddock where the bull lives, a farm located past Wingham, in the Manning Valley NSW.

After wandering around the many cows & calves with the camera I picked out the most colourful ones to paint alongside the bull. The large brindle Brahma cow was a spectacular animal so she was one of the main choices.
The gum trees in the background were a perfect setting for
the portrait.

Yes I agree, it is my best work…actually the owner commissioned another 2 paintings after this 1. I’m gobsmacked with all the wonderful comments from people such as yourself in RedBubble. The greatest compliment an artist can receive is one from another artist.

Nice handling of the animal’s anatomy, expressions, and individual personalities. Their paddock is so nicely done, too.

I love the setting, reminds me of my old property in gippsland, victoria :-)

  • louisegreen replied

Thank you very much Maddy, this is a lovely farm where these animals reside. All are in beautiful condition, there was about 70 to photograph that day – amazing colours, pretty little calves & I walked around with the camera for ages trying to get them all. These were my pick to paint alongside the bull.

One clever artist, the muscle structure is spot on. The bull has a very ‘feminine’ head but a gr8 bod.
    Love the names especially Bellyache.

Thank you Temma, appreciate your visit:-0

Really excellent work Louise! What an amazingly detailed painting and the background ‘greeness’ complements the warm colours in the cattle perfectly. The person you did this for must have been absolutely delighted!

Thanks for your lovely comments Lynda, sorry I missed replying.
The owners are very proud of this painting, in fact they commissioned 2 other works after this one. There was so much work in this actual painting, but I was very pleased with the final result.
