tree jover hanging tree loui jover surreal
This is a very heavy duty emotional work..very emotional…You know of course about the horrific racist murders of black men in the “Old South”?Billie Holiday sang a song written about the racial hanging of black men from the trees during that time. The song is called Strange FruitHere are the lyrics.Southern trees bear strange fruitBlood on the leavesBlood at the rootBlack bodies swinging in the southern breezeStrange fruit hanging from the poplar treesPastoral scene of the gallant southThe bulging eyes and the twisted mouthThe scent of magnolia sweet and freshThen the sudden smell of burning fleshHere is a fruit for the crows to pluckfor the rain to gatherfor the wind to suckfor the sun to rotfor the tree to dropHere is a strange and bitter crop
Composed by Abel Meeropol (aka Lewis Allan)Originally sung by: Billie Holiday
you know this work has been hanging around (really no pun intended) for such a long time….in sketch form in my diary/sketch book and the idea sis indeed stem from the song ‘strange fruit’ one day i heard a whole radio documentary around the creation of the song and it touched me deeply, it is easily my favorite Billie Holiday song and there is no possible way one can’t be deeply touched on its hearing it…..so in kind this is a homage to that direct influence you so beautifully picked, i did not call it so for two reasons firstly I thought it would be pretentious and obvious to do so and secondly because it is not only a homage to that song any longer, I wanted it to express a bigger picture one the viewer could decide one that harps on growth and mans reliance on nature and how our very lives hang in the balance of its branches…we destroy our natural surrounds without thought and with an alarming abandon yet we hang our own selves in the process….thank you for your beautiful comment and for leaving such wonderful words here heather and thank you for the ‘link’ i hope many will go to it and listen……..i am going to go now again. :)

I looked at this and wanted to describe my feelings, first, a beautifully balanced golden hue, tricks my mind into thinking this isn’t what I think it is, I step back look again, realise it is what I think it is……my brow furrows, my heart beats quicker, I feel appalled, fearful, sad, my emotions reach some extreme level, some tears sting my eyes, and then I am overwhelmed with sadness…and there is release, and the sunet’s glow, says to me, they no longer have the worries of this world to contend with…..but the afterglow leaves us flat and sorrowful. And them I am quiet…. very very quiet. Sobered. Powerful. Potent. Poignant.
