Artist's Description

This is a photograph I took of my mother when I was 16. She was terminally ill with cancer at the time and in her final year of an Art Degree (which she completed happily before she died).

This photograph that we took was intended to be positive and to shed light onto what can be a dark and consuming truth: contrasting the ‘blackness’ of the bald head/illness with the light shining down onto her face – an interaction between my mum and life, or between my mum and the ‘light’ of death (such as a peaceful afterlife or liberation from the physical self).

My mum was smiling in this photograph and it always gives me good, happy feelings.
