Watercolour of Lavatera (Tree mallow) done with M Graham , W&N & Daniel Smith watercolours on Saunders Waterford 200LB rough “High White”. 15" X 22".An enjoyable piece to do and one which has been on the cards for a long time, the only difficulty is portraying that lovely pink that mallows have. I have got fairly close with this although there is one colour which i need to purchase which i do not own and never have which is Opera rose which with the amount of florals i now do is a definate requirement !

I think I have had Opera Rose before…..mmmmmm, I need to check, and if I don’t, I know what my next purchase will be. Really impressed with your florals lately Bill, certainly including this one,

  • Many many thanks Jim, Opera rose is the richest of pinks whilst still retaining its pink like character, other pinks either are very weak or change to more red when painting in masstone.

This stopped me in my tracks this morning Bill, lovely work! I have Opera rose (the W&N, more permanent version) but I rarely, if ever, use it….. maybe I need to paint lavatera!!!

  • Many many thanks Dear Ruth, yes W&N is the only one to use as the other makes are fugitive which makes it a pointless task in using it, It is a perfect colour for some works where you need the shocking pink although it is not one that you require all the time,I like quinacridone pink, however, in masstone it becomes to red whilst some other pinks have a low tinting strength and require multiple glazes.

    warmest regards Bill
