Artist's Description

This is a painting done with gouache on Arches watercolour paper, whilst on a spiritual trip to India.
This rose is a symbol of peace and was created and grown in France by FrancisMeilland, I was given this book by one of my dear friends Pat who was a member of the Compassionate Friends Society after our son died. I planted this rose for him after reading the book and this beautiful story’
I love roses…had to look this one up and it says, “Imagine a rose so special it had to be smuggled out of a country by an American consul. Farmers were told that all gardens had to pulled out to make way to grow vegetables to feed the troops and people during the war.History remembers the same rose being introduced to the world the day Allied forces claimed Berlin, and on V-E Day, May 8, 1945, being presented to all 49 delegates at the very first United Nations Conference. Uncannily, it received The American Rose Society’s first Gold Medal the day the peace treaty was signed with Japan. This is the PEACE ROSE. And its romantic story is full of hope, perseverance and most of all providence amidst history’s bittersweet memories of human suffering and determination. Introduced to the United States in 1945 by Robert Pyle, president of The Conard-Pyle Co., growers of Star¨ Roses, PEACE was the one and only AARS winner for 1946. Since its crowning in 1946, PEACE, has become the most popular rose ever bred, an international favorite and a spontaneous symbol of the hope for peace. ’PEACE’ ENVELOPED IN ROMANTIC HISTORY In 1939, a young and gifted French rose breeder, Francis Meilland, discovered a remarkable rose he had nurtured from a single seed. Realizing the beginning of World War II posed threats to the flower’s fate, Meilland dispatched seedlings to growers in Italy, Germany and the United States.”
