Reclamation

Reclamation

A structure of wood and brick fights a losing battle with nature. The adjacent steel structure of the foundry has a firmer hold in the weather, but this half of the structure is crumbling more with every passing season.

Wow, I want to be there right now.
It looks like a picture of a soul..

  • Michael Gatch replied

It is an amazing place. It’s like an industrial cathedral. I spent about a half hour laying on the catwalk in the other room just looking around and relaxing while my friend looked around.

Love this! Several times I was in exactly such old buildings (mostly old abandoned textile factories) but was sent away each time by security people :( Well okay, it’s pretty dangerous out there, I admit.

  • Michael Gatch replied

I have only been confronted a few times and I’m very good at asserting myself and am rather friendly and usually get more information on the location. So I’m actually happy to see an owner or authority figure who may know more. I usually approach them quite nicely and exclaimed how happy I am to see them and ask if they know any more about the place. They are usually so taken back by it they have no idea what to say.

The decay becomes more and more evident every year….one day you’ll show up and bulldozers will have taken it all….so it’s great that you’ve documented it while you can!

  • Michael Gatch replied

ohhh don’t even say that. I try to put that out of my mind. there was actually a HUGE industrial building that was right next to it and stretched all the way out to the street. massive place that still shows as existing on google earth. It looks like it caught fire and was demolished. kills me that we didn’t get there a month or so earlier and we would have seen what that place was like, just glad this old foundry hasn’t met the wrecking ball yet. of course it never will, they just tear things apart with backhoes now. The steudabaker plant in south bend was torn down a few years ago right after i found out about it and wanted to see it. So many great places are being ripped apart before I can see them….very sad >.<

  • Mel Brackstone replied

For sure, Michael, you can’t be everywhere though….as long as you do what you can!

Another great shot. Like Mel said, it’s great that you get to document this before someone decides it’s time to tear it down.

oh wow… and you said I have great work?! I’ve been dying to capture something like this ever since I became a photographer, Michael!! there’s always something beautiful about seeing nature take back what was hers… unfortunately I’m not entirely sure if SoCal has a whole lot of dilapidated houses like this one

    beautiful image, man

  • Michael Gatch replied

It was a beautiful old foundry, my latest journal explains that nature didn’t get to finish what it started and man once again intervened. I was really hoping to get more shots here too, but that will never happen. I’ll just have to find a better place to shoot.

Terrific picture michael sadly lots of old historic type buildings are being ripped to shreds all over the world the question is WHY

  • Michael Gatch replied

Liablility, eyesores, public distaste. Politicians “cracking down”

A load of malarkey is ya ask me!
