You were raised
On the backs of stories
And tall people that swept those
Stories around like the wind
Swept them amongst themselves
Along their leaves and branches
The dark oak of their skin
Their roots
They swept them past the
The pout of their lips
Dropped them cautiously
As seeds to be dug by you
Watered and cared for
Those stories grew into flesh and bone
They made you from the words of their heart
They swept you up
New and green
And spoke of you
Like the breeze
Passing you around like an unheard secret
But always they kept you near
To tell you
And mind you
To root you with oil
And wash you clean
To write in you new verses
Which you lovingly tattooed
Into the palm of my hands.

Oh goodness, this is gorgeous, quiet writing. Beautiful delicious imagery that conjures stories, ancestors and trees entwined. Reading this made me feel the same wonderful magic as walking into a room full of books that whisper magic, stories and history. Which you lovingly tattooed into the palm of my hands. Sigh. Exquisite.
