Screw this size zero culture!

Canon 450D
F-stop: 3.5 (-0.3 exposure bias)
Exposure time: 1/30 sec.
ISO-speed: 200
Focal length: 18mm

Desaturated, then contrastified, then added lots of noize. It’s difficult to work with images that aren’t good quality in the first place.. Experimenting with B&W and noise.
Self-portrait, because I DON’T LIKE THIS SIZE ZERO RUBBISH. Too much pressure on young girls to put their bodies through too much! It should stooooop!!

Rant over. Back to the image, you likey?

LOVE IT!!! The black and white is amazing and I like the “noize” it adds intensity to what you are trying to say….and of course I love the message. So well conveyed. :D

  • JustSaul

    JustSaul

I agree with your message! What the media does to young girls and their self image is horrible and I’m guy and think that. I wanna see a cool shot of a girl measuring her waist and cutting it with scissors, only shot with your tragemarked intensity.

  • lollipoppins replied

Ahh! That’s such an awesome idea!! I might do that, if you don’t mind me stealing the idea. I promise to credit you. :D

Lovely photo! Rock on with your bad self, Lolli – i think we should create a group here dedicated to this concept…we could start with a couple of our images and go from there…

  • Selkie

    Selkie

Well, i do have to say that some of us are naturally “stick insects”, and that’s totally fine. It’s natural, it’s metabolism. I’ve had other women say nasty things about my body being “anorexic”, which i’m not. I think women (and men) need to accept their bodies as they are, skinny or zaftig.

  • lollipoppins replied

Yeah, I totally agree with you! It goes beyond weight too, people are pressured into wearing their hair a certain way, or even acting a certain way! In this day and age, we should be learning to accept ourselves, and not only ourselves but other people!

Yes, indeed. Here’s another we can add to our new group :).

I think you two are on to a winner! Its not just young girls either. Men and women are pressured into ‘building’ up their self image to adeer to what the media enforce as a ‘stereotypical’ way of life. People should be happy with the way they are; big, skinny, built or whatever…

That said – Great image!!! Let me know what happens with this group…

well, you certainly have a lot of comments< i just read them all!
fantastic effort here, this culture is nuts! its my formal/prom next week and yesterday i was eating a bagel. one of the ‘popular’ (barbie) girls said to my friend next to me said, and i quote “OMG, shes eating carbs!” i physically had to walk away, i was laughing so hard.
bagels are so tasty, especially that one.
Anyway (and this is a really long comment) i have a photo that would be great in your group, its called materialism, its the way of the future… check it out! chookas child, kell bell.

  • lollipoppins replied

Whaaaat? Thats ridiculous. I hope she chokes on her… I don’t know, whatever she ‘eats’. Bagels are lush. Everybody should it bagels.
I shall check it out! Thanks for the comment! :)

  • Julialala

    Julialala

This picture is brilliant, it says SO much. How the hell the world got to the state it’s in at the moment, I don’t know. People seem to have stopped caring about things worth caring about, and have become so materialistic. I really don’t see the beauty of this size zero culture. I dont understand how supposedly intelligent people have become so obsessed with themselves and their image. It’s as though we’re all turning into Dorian Grays, given all this dieting and make up, liposuction and plastic surgery. What do girls feel they have achieved when they’ve reached the weight of an undernourished eight year old? Perhaps the Auschwitz look was ahead of its time? That’s all that comes to my mind when I see these skeletal girls – concentration camps and the thought of not eating for days, being ravaged by disease, and overworked. Hardly attractive.
    Anyway, I think I rambled a bit there…sorry…
My point is simply that this is an awesome shot. =]

  • lollipoppins replied

It wasn’t rambling, it was spot on the point! And well said!!

    Kjersti Andrea...

Normally I suck at writing decent comments, but this deserves one.

First off, I’d like to say that this is an outstanding, brilliant idea and photo.
Technically, I LOVE the contrasts, grain (it looks more like film grain than noise, really), focus, composition and LIGHT… WOW!!!
That’s not actually what strikes me the most about it though, as much as it could’ve been. The striking bit is the message. As someone who has, and continues to struggle with this, this is amazing.
I hate how, well, every person found in the media is skinny, beautiful and succesful. So many, both girls and guys, have real problems with this. You start focusing on it, and suddenly it consumes you. Ugh!!!! I think part of the problem, however, is that for someone who hasn’t been through this themselves, it’s almost impossible to understand it completely.

I did a rather lengthy analysis on a similar (buit not nearly as good) shot for school last year, and I love how every bit of this supports the message.

    Excellent work!!
