My husband and I go to Seagrove, NC every year on our anniversary to visit the many potteries there. We didn’t see any pottery we liked at this particular place, but they had a lot of “cute” animals walking around. This turkey came right up to me and posed for a few pics.

A turkey is either of two or three living species of large birds in the genus Meleagris. One species, Meleagris gallopavo, commonly known as the Wild Turkey, is native to the forests of North America. The other species, Meleagris ocellata, known as the Ocellated Turkey, is native to the forests of the Yucatán Peninsula.

The domestic turkey is a descendant of the Wild Turkey and features prominently in the menu of the U.S. and Canadian holidays of Thanksgiving and that of Christmas in many countries.

Turkeys are classed in the taxonomic order of Galliformes. Within this order they are relatives of the family/subfamily Tetraonidae (grouse). Turkeys have a distinctive fleshy wattle that hangs from the underside of the beak, and a fleshy protuberance that hangs from the top of its beak called a snood. With wingspans of 1.5–1.8 metres (4.9–5.9 ft), the turkeys are by far the largest birds in the open forests in which they live. As with many Galliform species the female (hen) is smaller than the male (tom or gobbler) and is much less colorful. – wikipedia

Good portrait Pam. We had a few on the farm when I was a kid, they could be quite territorial.

  • Thanks J.D. This guy was pretty non-threatening. I think he was looking for a little handout. Unfortunately we didn’t have food to give him.

  • Thanks Sue. I had in my view finder as he walked up to us, and he was getting so close, I was having trouble focusing on him. It actually startled me how close he was when I took the camera away from my eye. Some turkeys can be a little aggressive, but he was seemed very friendly.
