Driving along a narrow country Pennsylvania road, you round a corner and see a lovely scene. Slamming on the brakes in the snow and ice with who-knows-what right behind you is never advisable, so you manage not to get too lost and make your way back. Checking the rear view mirror to make sure you’re alone on the road, tapping the brakes carefully and rolling down the window you grab the camera (which is always sitting beside you on the passenger seat, waiting) and shoot.

Image taken in January of 2009 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens. Lots of editing fun in Photoshop CS4, Nikon CaptureNX2 and also including hdr in Photomatix. Textures from Jerry Jones of Shadowhouse Creations and Florabella Textures. The addition of a tiny, bright red cardinal from my own back yard from another image was added in Photoshop CS4. Can you find him?

… for a view of the same farm, taken in the autumn without snow, visit Sweet, Sweet Surrender

Very nice Lois, I can almost feel the cold. Love the soft tones and spot of red.

I find it fascinating how processing can change the perspective of an image…great capture, love both version but this one has a little something extra!! Thanks for sharing the original as well!! Great work Lois! ;-))))))

  • Hi Marie!!!! Thank you!!! OOOO I have to tell you, though .. and I didn’t explain myself very well in the description … that this image was taken at a different time of year than “Sweet, Sweet Surrender.” Same farm, but this one really was taken in the winter. I hope to go back and get a pretty spring and summer shot too, as I really like the composition. It’s just a tough stretch of road … you come up on it very suddenly.

It has been a slow winter in the snow department :o(
We finally had some snow last week…6 inches, may get an additional 3 in. , but then warmer weather coming in grrr…

  • Hi Dawn, yes, very little snow here, too … but we go up to the mountain in PA … and there’s plenty there!!!!
