Tulip's Demise - A Natural Abstract by

Featured in Still Life Photography April 16, 2010.

I bought some tulips a few weeks back … to photograph of course … but wasn’t wild about the results. As they died, however, they got more interesting.

Image taken with the tripod mounted Nikon D300, 60mm Nikon Macro/Micro lens at 60mm focal length. Shutter speed 1/15, aperture f/8.0, exp. 0.00, iso 200, SB400 flash, bounced and natural light from the window. Post work minimal … curves.

Yesterday I saw an exhibition of beautiful prints on this very subject! Average price $3,500 Aust. It was one of about 25 exhibitions by invited international photographers as part of our bi-annual FotoFreo Festival of Photography here in Western Australia. So you are in very good company here!!

  • Oh WOW Christina!!!!! How cool that must have been!!! I guess I was a day late and a dollar short, eh??? Seriously, I’m kind of relieved to know that I’m not completely crazy, posting a dead flower here among all these beautiful fresh spring posies on RB!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

This is fantastic capture. Perfect DOF and framing. Brilliant shot.

  • Many, many thanks!!!!! I’ll share a little story with you. When I was a kid, all I ever wanted to do was draw and paint. One day, about this time of year, I was sitting on the sofa and the near-dead daffodils that Mom had in a vase on the coffee table took my eye. I had so much fun drawing them and painting them!!!! My mom convinced me to show them to my art teacher at school … and she liked the piece so much she put it into some kind of local / regional juried show. It won something, not a clue what … but we never got the picture back. I think on some level, I’ve been trying to recreate that image ever since. This is just another version.
