This image is also available at Lois Bryan at fine art america in an exciting variety of framing and matting options.

This adorable female cardinal perched outside my kitchen French doors (in Maryland) during The Big Blizzard of ’09 yesterday, December 19, 2009, clearly a bit kerflustered (thanks again Renee Dawson for that perfect word!) by all the snow and wind. But just to her side is a huge bird feeder, filled to the brim with tasty goodies for her and her family.

Focal distance 300mm.

Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter 1/20, aperture f/9, exp -.33, iso 1000. Spot metering. Post processing included work in levels and curves. Nothing fancy … no textures.

Also available as a Christmas card:

WOW LOIS, you are managing to get EVERYTHING out of that D300 and 70-300! ISO 1000? No hint of noise. LOVE the title! We got a little dusting last night, that’s it. Was hoping for tons of snow …. Awesome shot!

  • LOL … didn’t I tell you I got birdie pix??? Went out with Sadie (one of our dogs) this morning and I think I got some fantastic dog-running-in-snow shots, too. I’m going to bore everyone to screams with all these!!!! Thanks so much for your note … so happy you enjoyed it!! And yes, the D300 can crank up that iso with amazing results!!!!! But with this lens, you just have to watch your f stop. Sweet spot is between f8 and f11.

  • Thanks so much, JK!!!! You hit the nail on the head with your comment about attitude … it always amazes me how expressive the faces of these little birdies can be!!!

LOL What a wonderful “facial feature” on this delightful cardinal…. So many quotations go through my mind due to her expression…. I’m just smiling!!! How wonderful!!!

  • LOL!!!! Hey Brenda, thank you … I should have come to you for title ideas!!! Funny thing is, sometimes I won’t even post a shot until the right title hits me. And sometimes, I’ll post a so-so shot just because I like the title I thought up!!!!! So glad you enjoyed this one!!!!!
