“In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen,
Snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter,
Long ago.
Although written by Christina Rossetti before 1872, it was published posthumously in Rossetti’s Poetic Works in 1904 and became a Christmas carol after it appeared in The English Hymnal in 1906 with a setting by Holst.
According to the website CyberHymnal, Rossetti wrote these words in response to a request from the magazine Scribner’s Monthly for a Christmas poem” … Wikipedia
“Bleak Midwinter” has been one of my favorite Christmas carols for years now … I first heard it sung by John Gorka and encourage everyone, if you can find it, to listen. Here’s another lovely version of it that I hope you enjoy!!
Also available as a Christmas card:
