Wandering around my cousin’s farm in Davidsonville, Maryland, I fell in love with so many images. This was taken from the inside of an old tobacco barn which we calculate to be well over a hundred years old.

This image is a compilation of two shots, both my own. The barn image, RAW, taken on my Manfrotto tripod, was shot on a disappointingly gray and overcast October 29, 2009 with the Nikon D300. Shutter 1/500, aperture f/11.0, exp 0.00, iso 1600. Sky image, a hand held jpeg, was taken August 29, 2009 with the Nikon D300, shutter 1/640, aperture f/13, exp -.67, iso 400. Lens was 18-200mm vr Nikon in both cases. After the image was combined, I created an hdr in Photomatix by duplicating the jpeg to evals of +1 and -2 in Photoshop. Lots of Photoshop tweaking including addition of 2 textures.

  • Lois Bryan replied 22 days ago

Hey Wendy … thank you!!!! The sky in the original was one of those washed out white dealies. Even with PS tinkering I couldn’t coax anything interesting out of it. We’d had an incredible could day earlier which I was able to snap, so the combination made sense. Thank heavens for PS!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied 22 days ago

Ric, thanks so much!!!! I always do my everything in the Fine JPEG … the barn part of this is one of the first times I’ve bothered with the RAW. Still don’t see the point since my Photoshop doesn’t process RAW images. Have tried the converter thingies without success (need to upgrade my Photoshop one of these days, I guess) ...

I drove around like a crazy woman, pulling over by the side of the road, jumping out of the car, snapping the clouds, hopping back in … well … you get the picture!!! Fantastic shot, Lois! Very nice composition and treatment. Tobacco barn… Hmm… I don’t smoke, though. Well, if I had such a barn full of tobacco leaves… (shut up, Arvy!) :)

  • Lois Bryan replied 21 days ago

laughing Thank you, dear Arvy!!!!! This barn was probably built mid to late 1800s … and when I first saw it … we won’t say how long ago … tobacco farming was still a respected way to earn a living. In fact, the blisters I got “topping tobacco” were my pride and joy one summer!!!! LOL!!!!

Love how you framed that beautiful Autumn landscape with the entrance to the old barn, we just don’t get Autumn colours at all like those over here, the leaves just turn a rotted version of green then blow away in the first strong winds so it makes it all the more of a pleasure to view, well photographed dear Lois,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Lois Bryan replied 19 days ago

Rod thank you so much!!!!! Some years here are more amazing than others … this year was very rainy, but on the few sunny days I was in heaven!!! This was actually shot on a very gray day, but I managed to coax some color out of it!!!

Brilliant Lois, PS. is brilliant at producing grater work than the original images, or image could have done. Half the process involves thinking of an image you want to obtain, and then working out how to achieve that ! As the winter nights draw in over here, photoshop takes over. You have mastered the art of P.S., and I shall crown you “Queen of P.S.”

    Colin, in a damp dark U.K. !

  • Lois Bryan replied 18 days ago

Colin, you are a sweetheart. Thank you SO much. I’ll share with you that my ultimate goal is great shots right out of the camera, but it doesn’t happen as much as I’d like. I’m still working on it, though. And in the meantime, I get to play and paint, as I did with this one!!! It’s a bit “out there” even for me … but I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the final product!!!!!! i swear, if everyone could see some of my originals, I’d be booted out of the Bub in a heartbeat, LOL!!!! Thanks again, dear friend!!!!!!

  • Lois Bryan replied 17 days ago

Hi Ron!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! It was such a dull day, that this image truly did take shape in my imagination, lol!!!! The clouds were non-existent … I tried everything to bring them out then just gave up and added a new image. I thought it worked!!!

  • hologram

a real nice feel to this expertly worked image. What a great combination shot that works so well. The colours jump out at you from beyond that barn door, great framing also.

    h

  • Lois Bryan replied 17 days ago

Thanks so so much, H … I never know if I go too far for everyone else’s tastes, but I guess that’s the essence of this kind of thing. We have to get the first “kick” out of the image ourselves, and if anyone else feels it too, that’s icing on the cake!!!!!
