I’ve been sitting on this one since spring … waiting for the proper season to bring him out in all his glory. Captured in the wilds of Arizona up in the mountains not far from Green Valley and Tucson. Was using the Nikon D40x at the time with my trusty 70-300mm vr Nikon lens and must say everything I shot with that lens was crap. Pardon me. But it was bad. Have since learned about the sweet spot of an ap between f/8 and f/11 … so for any of you out there with this lens, take heed. I so adored the turkey shot, tho, that with a lot of hand tooling of the dodge and burn variety using my blessed Wacom Intuos 4 tablet, I think we got a usable image out of the day. And of course the textures hid a multitude of sins, lol!!!
Shutter was 1/320, aperture was f/5.6, focal length 180, iso 400. Hdr in Photomatix from a single hand-held jpeg, duped to evals of +/-2 in Photoshop … and a couple of added textures
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!! And don’t forget … everyone loves hot dogs!!!!!!
Also available with Thanksgiving Wishes!!

Lois Bryan replied
Hi Philip … yes, around here they get VERY nervous right about now!!!!
artisandelimage
everyone loves hot dogs!!!!!! lol
no crap in sight, just a great seasonal work !
my best, francis.
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!!!! Thanks so so much, dear!!!! I must have spent at least an hour crawling all over the mountain stalking this guy and his lady friends. Have some shots that would have been fabulous … but oh well. I did manage to salvage this one.
cherylc1
FABULOUS SHOT AND COLORS!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiii Cheryl!!! Thanks, hon!!!!
LavenderMoon
Hahaha! Poor guy! Hope he makes it! Great shot, Poopsie!
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!!!! Well, as tame-ish as he was … he might be sitting on somebody’s table in a couple weeks … poor guy indeed!!!! thanks, Poopsie!!!!!
Rosemary Scott
Run Dude Run!!! great shot Lois… you’ve done a fantastic job with it!!
Lois Bryan replied
HAHAHHAAAA!!! Oh, Rosemary, I like your “Run Dude Run!!!” SOO much better!!! I was thinking “Run Forrest Run” but didn’t want the copyright police to come after me again, LOL!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!
Dennis Rubin IPA
great job! Look out, gobble, gobble!
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!!! Thanks, Dennis!!
elisab
Neat little turkey… Yep, I think he is nervous like Phillip said!!
Lois Bryan replied
LOL … as well he SHOULD be!!!!
jesika
I remember hearing a mother telling her impressionable children, that the Peacock displaying all his glory, looked just like a turkey…......
He’s a handsome bird, in a turkey sort of way, but I can’t see the resemblance.
Nice shot, Lois.
jx
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! Well, I’m sure there’s a lesson in there … about vanity and pride, I’ll bet??? But I’m with you … turkeys are all well and good, but there’s little comparison between them and a good peacock!!!! But you know what?? The turkey doens’t know that!!!! LOL!!! Maybe THAT’s the lesson!!!!!
Sean Jansen
Lol, great title for this beautiful capture. Looks awesome : )

Gobble gobble : )
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!! hiiiiii Sean!!! Thank you!! Hey, I haven’t asked in awhile .. how are you feeling??? Doing great I hope???
billfox256
After reading the amazing adventures in the production of this shot I am totally exhausted so I will just say TERRIFIC!!!!, Bill
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! Thanks, hon!!!! But oh, not THAT amazing!!!! But frustrating … these guys REALLY know how to hid in the brush!!!
Maureen Maliha
Hot Dogs? How about Not Dogs? ;-) Really very, very beautiful work my Lois, as always.
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! Well, as to the hot dogs, another of the many titles that rolled around in my head was “Got Beef??” But again, the copyright police have nabbed me once … best not to ruffle their feathers yes, pun intended too often!!!! Thanks for visiting!!!!
Mary Campbell
Amazing to see such a fat one in the wild, he must of escaped from a turkey farm!
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! I don’t think so … I think this area is called the Madera Canyon … tho I may have that wrong … I got everything else wrong when I was out there, lol!!!! But it looked pretty wild and freeeeee to my East Coast eyes when I was there!!!! He had his harem of about a dozen or so lady friends and a bunch of young toms with him … so he was definitely struttin’ his stuff.
Rany Lutz
Excellent!!! These guys are not easy to shoot….
Lois Bryan replied
thanks, Rany … he and his crew were oddly close to a number of people .. I’ve got one fun shot of him passing by in a very stately manner beside a couple of people with cameras and surprised looks on their faces, lol!!!! But he was also cagy .. most of my shots are of weeds with turkey parts in the background, lol!!!!!
Evita
♥ Excellent capture Lois !!!
Such rich and warm colours .. wonderfull !! :D ♥
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks, hon!!! Even tho I took this in April, out there these earthy colors predominate so it still has a fall-ish feel to it.
Ric Alexander
Nice image Lois ! Must add that it is terrible that the big players ( canon, nikon etc) produce lenses that are very soft and charge considerable amounts for them. When using canon, I had to purchase L lenses to get good results. Even my £1000 ukp 100-400 L lens didnt hit the focusing at times, which i found terrible.
Lois Bryan replied
You know, it’s funny but I’d never noticed the problem until I got the D300 in June. Then I was appalled at the lack of crispness in the images. Put up a journal and started asking questions and someone mentioned the sweet spot in that lens and you know, as long as I keep it on aperture priority or manual and keep the ap at the right spots, I’m good to go. The problem with what I was doing on this particular day, which was way before I even realized I had a problem, was I was working on shutter priority to try and get all the herky-jerky head and neck movements photographable. These guys do NOT hold still. But I was in relatively low light. So, for novice little me, it was a bit of a lose-lose. But even taking shots of regular ordinary birds that day … in BRIGHT light … the shots didn’t turn out. As long as I keep the thing in its sweet spot, it’s okay. And tho this is a nice little lens, it’s not one of the really high end jobbers. The one I have is at around $600 US right now.
sigfusson
LOL.. great shot Lois. Glad you found a way to salvage it! Maybe you should write a journal entry titled “How to turn a turkey shot into a great turkey shot!” Hugs, S.
Lois Bryan replied
BWAHAHAHAH!!!! Oh you have me laughing, now!!!! Tooo funny!!!! But heavens, you’re assuming I actually remember exactly what it was I did to this thing!!!! I seriously nearly dumped it more than once … but I liked its bones, so kept at it … tinkering away over 6 months!!!! thanks sooo much, dearie!!!!!
Lois Bryan
Pam Moore
lol….great shot and artwork. You have done a very nice job here and it would have been difficult for me to wait so long to submit..hehe
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks so much Pam!!! But yes you would have if you’d seen it as it came out of the camera. It need time to “cook” if you’ll pardon the terrible pun, lol!!!!
fortner
Whats this Poopsie stuff I noticed while reading the comments, have you been holding more back on us than the Turkey? This is a great shot Lois, I have several that need fixing up, are you looking for work ?
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! I honestly can’t tell you at this point how Robyn and I started that!!! LOL!!!! We’ve been doing it for ages!!!!! So happy you enjoyed this one!!!! As for looking for work??? You got da money, I got da skillzz!!!
Paul Gitto
Excellent!!
Poor bird!
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks, Paul!!!! He’s probably fine … talk about free range .. he’s got whole mountains to hide in!!!!!!!
richiedean
I always think, a turkeys head was a compromise ….. I mean ….. look at the deftly arranged plumage …... superb in its volume and shape …......... then its head …....... skull on the outside with its brains oozing from its nostrils and it has a skinless neck ............ a real life Photoshop composite …...... pass the cranberry sauce Lois ….......... :))
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Richie … lord, hon … oh .. eaugh … LOL!!!! WHAT a description .. and soooooooo appropriate!!!!!! I’ll never look at a turkey the same way again!!!!! Tooooooooo funny!!!
Beve Brown-Clark
OOOooOOOOoo its Tom turkey time!! Awesome Lois!
Lois Bryan replied
yep yep!!!!! Getting there, sweetie!!!!! I can taste the turkey and stuffin’ already!!!! MMMMMMM!!! OOP … hope my little buddy up there didn’t hear me type that, lol!!!!!!
Angie McKenzie
awesome image lois!! great effects!!
now about that lens… i love it!! and have to agree that when using this lens the shots always came out better with an ap around 8. this is my trusty lens for taking shots of forrest, especially on the beach. not great in low light but awesome in bright light. :)
Lois Bryan replied
Yeah, isn’t that funny about the sweet spot?? Between 8 and 11 .. and now I find myself shooting on those with the 18-200, too, but I need to get scientific and see if it really matters on that one. But it’s a great little lens for the money … long as we’re using it right, lol!!!!
Bellavista2
Brilliant photo! Perfect timing! Run Turkey Run Gobble! Maybe he might be the lucky one the president pardons this year:=]
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much … I’m pretty sure he’ll be fine. He’s got a LOT of territory to hide in!!!!! Mountains full!!!!!

Lois Bryan replied
Hiii Kate!!!!! I’m sure he’s just fine … he’s waaaaaaay out there in the boondocks!!! Believe me!!!!
LudaNayvelt

Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!! Luda, he’s a wild turkey … as in .. he lives in the mountains in Arizona!!!!! And he looks like he’s lived thru more than one Thanksgiving … I’m sure he’ll be okay!!!!
JKKimball
time is short…. HIDE little buddy :)
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!!! I’m sure he will!!!!!!!
Tallow
fantastic work Lois. Let’s hope he didn’t make on someone’s table this year
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! Yes, Dave .. bless his feathered little heart … let’s hope!!!! I don’t know what all his wives and children would do without him strutting around, lol!!!!! The thing really was a hoot to watch!!!!!! Soooo careful not to scare him away … but soooo wanting a decent shot!!!! And yes, if I do say so myself, I do an EXCELLENT gobble-gobble call!!!!!!
BarbaraManis

Greetings Lois; A beautiful capture, the colors and detail of this great bird are wonderful. It would be hard to get a shot like this during the hunting seasons, they make themselfs invisable. I think they know when it is save to show up in the open.
steve
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Steve!!!!! Thank you!!!!! Their plumage really is extraordinary!!!!! And I do hope you’re right about hunting season … bless his heart!!!
Béla Török

...LOL – poor thing…since you’ve been sitting on him since spring…don’t think he’s gonna give you too much of a “run for it” no more!!! And since you spend all that time making him look sooo pretty in this image, here’s some friendly advice from Texas: Standing Rib-Roast, or a nice juicy t-bone steak for the holidays!!! :D…Cowgal greetings! Marita
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!!! hiiiii Marita!!!!!!! Well, I hear ya … and that does sound delicious!!! Ahhhh tradition!!!!
BigD

rodsfotos
It must be wonderful to actually see them in the wild never mind get as fine a detailed image as this one Lois, with Christmas dinners on the horizon, I’m sure the wise ones learn to move that little bit faster making them harder to photograph as well as bag for the plate, beautifully photographed dear Lois,
Regards, Rod.
Lois Bryan replied
Hello, hello Rod!!!! Thank you!!! You’d have laughed to see me crawling around among those grasses and rocks trying to keep my head down yet STILL get a decent pic!!! Either every shot was as a reed of grass strategically placed or woefully fuzzy. SO frustrating!!!! But there was this one … lol … and I’m honored that you enjoyed it!!!!! Gentle hugzzz!!!
dinghysailor1
yes runfrit birdie.. and a fabulous image.. by the way i meant to ask have you worked out the sweet spot on our lovely lens yet? i’m rather fond of 5.6 on that one somehow…
:)))
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Maggie!!!! i saw your note earlier today. At one point when I was out with the dogs and saw a GLORIOUS woodpecker … ran back into the house, grabbed the camera, grabbed the 70-300 lens and ran back outside .. (of course the bird was gone, lol) ... but i gave the lens a bit of a workout anyhow. I did THINK I had the kinks worked out at ap f/8 to ap f/11 … but i wasn’t wild about what I was seeing in camera today. Need to upload them and then really see. I’m so so glad you’re having good luck with it!!!
Tara Turner
fantastic!!
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks, Tara!!!
dinghysailor1
oops i meant our yummy 18-200VR… didnt mean to confuse…
:))
Lois Bryan replied
OH!!! You know, I thought that was what you meant, but there was so much back and forth on this picture about the 70-300 my tiny brain went there instead!!! You know, the 18-200 does a lovely job for me wherever I set it … on both cameras. It doesn’t seem to be as fickle as the other … I’m so so so pleased you are still enjoying it … especially as I had the effrontery to recommend the thing before I even had one, lol!!!!!! And don’t worry, I’m easily confused!!! It’s my usual condition!!!!
Shaun Whiteman
Lovely details and processing…I love the colours and textures!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Shaun!!!! Thank you!!!! The countryside and colors are so different in Arizona compared to what I’m used to on the east coast!!!
Charuhas Images
Awesome…Beautiful colors and textures.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you!!!
seawhisper
He really look impressive! :)
Lois Bryan replied
