This sweet little church, at the corner of Triadelphia and Sharp Roads in Glenelg, Maryland, stands empty. Probably built around 1900, it was most recently used as the home and studio of a local artist who has since gone to live in the sunnier climate of Mexico. Happily, the congregation of this beautiful little chapel didn’t die out, as so often happens, but instead grew too large for this structure and built a much larger church not far down the road. I was quite excited to have the opportunity to tour here July 26, 2009 when the realtor was holding an open house, as I’d driven past many times and had always wanted to investigate!!
Image taken with the handheld Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, shutter 1/250, aperture f/8.0, exp -.33, iso 500. Post work included hdr from 4 images at +3, +1, 0 and -2 evals … all duplicated and adjusted in Photoshop. Subsequent Orton technique was applied in PS, as were three textures at various blendings, and the brushed-in clouds.
Included below is a capture of one of the windows in which, if you look carefully, you can see a reflection of the church bell …
which was directly behind me as I shot the window …

My thanks to Princess of Shadows on Deviant Art and Ghostbones of Flickr for the great textures and to Obsidian Dawn for the cloud brushes.

Yuri Lev
It looks like a nineteenth century Turner landscape Lois. Mosseltopf!!
Lois Bryan replied
You couldn’t have given me a finer compliment, Yuri. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. His works are, to me, the very essence of beauty … his Mortlake Terrace is one of my all time favorite images.

nadine henley
looks like the land is gently reclaiming it i- lovely shot, lois
Lois Bryan replied
Hello sweetheart!!!!!! How are you doing????? Yes, it does look like that … well … it’s been there a pretty long time and I get the feeling the previous owner was away more than she was in residence, at least for the last decade or so.
Linda Gregory
What an interesting home this would make, Lois. Beautiful capture.
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Linda!!!! How right you are … the inside, where the congregation would sit, must have been her shop … the area where the altar was is raised quite high and leads off to what she used as the bedrooms. She added several wings onto the back and other side which you really can’t see from this angle that she used for living space and for her studio. I had a ball traipsing all over the place investigating. Thanks for stopping by!!
Curtiss Simpson
You took a photograph and turned it into a beautiful piece of art, perfect in every way, beautiful Lois !!!

Yuri Lev
Mortlake Terrace is a stunning image. He painted looking into the sun, creating long shadows and a 3D effect. I see how the influence fflows in your creative DNA.
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Yuri, thank you!!!!! That one is … or was … at the National Gallery. I used to stand in front of it in awe. Before I discovered Webshots and Redbubble, I used to stare at it on the Nat’l Gallery’s website, too. One of the greatest things about here, to me, is the joy of actually getting to communicate with the great artists (like yourself) and have them / you chat back!!!

Steve Buffington
Your composition is perfect. Obviously you could have picked many POVs on this one, but the one you chose smokes. As usual, I am impressed with and admire the post processing.—Steve
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Steve, as you can imagine, I took zillions of pictures … included a couple in the side area of the window and bell … but for me, this was the one I wanted. I actually had to clone out a vintage black mustang and a rather large concrete slab (well cover??) and a bright red blanket draped over half of the well cover. But this is pretty much the pov I’d see when I’d drive past … so it was the one stamped in my head. Thanks so so much!!!!

Terence Russell
Picking only one from the thumbnailed images shown on the first page of your gallery, I seemingly hit the proverbial jackpot. It was immediately apparent as I scrolled down through the plethora of commentary that I was not the only one who saw the beauty of this dreamy vision. So wonderfully composed and the supplied effects superbly enhance the overall scene. I’d like to know more about cloud brushes, as my current method to improve bland skies over otherwise lovely scenes is to add clouds from my ever growing collection of cloud photos that I regularly take whenever there is a beautiful sky overhead.
Lois Bryan replied
Hello Terence!!!! Thank you very much for your beautiful comment!!! I’m honored!! This is one of those that … when that last button was clicked, I was happier than I expected to be. I love it when that happens!!! As to cloud brushes, go to “ObsidianDawn” ... she has a number of interesting brushes!! I usually do as you described, add my own clouds in layers to an image if I’m not happy with what Mother Nature provided, but the brushes are a fun alternative.
