A summer cornfield along Route 869 between Osterburg and Pavia, Pennsylvania. This image is actually fairly deceptive. I spent a lot of time working on a b&w sky and doing sc on the world below in order to create a somewhat threatening summer thunderstorm image. It fit as the world you see here, all sunny and golden, is actually thanks to the texture I eventually chose. In all reality, just as I took my last shot and headed back to the car big giant ploppy drops of rain began to fall … and those pretty clouds you see there Opened Up!!! LOL
Image taken August 8, 2008 with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm Nikon lens. I was inspired by a beautiful image from Svetlana Sewel called Road To … to resurrect this one from the pile and play a bit. It was treated with HDR in Photomatix from 5 images, all from a single handheld, at evals of +/-2. The texture added is courtesy of Princess of Shadows at Deviant Art. I also cropped a bit of the sky.

Wonderfull view Lopis..
Reminds me of that movie Children of the Corn
Greetings
John
Lois Bryan replied
John … thanks soo soo much!! Although I took this last year, the fields were just the same earlier this summer … lovely when there is continuity!!! And you’re so right about the movie, lol!!!
ericseyes
Nice work Lois, isn’t it neat to get inspired and then go back through the archives and find an old gem you forgot about. Hmm deja vu… did we already have this conversation LOL!?
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Eric!!!! Thanks so much!!!! And yes, I completely agree … the RB images we get to view and learn from are always an inspiration. I’d actually done this one up in sc with a b&w sky … had actually posted it earlier today … was inspired by an image from Ben Pacificer … but decided it was too dark for the mood of this scene. Deleted it and was going to go about my day, but something kept me at this one until I got the textures on and the lighting just right. I hate to think how many hours .. including into the wee ones last night (this morning??) I’ve spent on this one shot!!! I’m NUTZ!!!!
nadine henley
dramatic landscape, lois! looks like we’ve all been stopping by the side of the road and bewildering passers by!
Lois Bryan replied
Hey Nadine, hon!!! Thank you!!! Oh, how true!!! Although I shot this last summer, I was still out there, pulled over, shooting away, this past weekend!!! One of these days I’m going to get hit by a truck, lol!!!!!
BarbaraManis
Hi Lois! Great capture and treatment! It is fun to go back to old shots and play around with them. I’ve lost plenty of sleep doing that myself! Well, it sure paid off for you!
Lois Bryan replied
Hiii sweetie!!!! Thank you!!! Yes it is a blast … problem is I have been trying to go through old images to delete delete … but I always run across something I’d half forgotten about … or … one that since I now know a few more PS tricks might spiff up .. then dragging it over to PS … and completely forgetting that my main mission was to clear out old stuff I’ll never use!!! LOL!!! I’m a MESS!!!!! Great hearing from you, dearie!!! Hugzzz!!
dinghysailor1
oooh do take care my excellent friend.. and love what you’ve done with this and especially your explanations are a wonderful learning for me..
cheers
maggie
:))
Lois Bryan replied
LOL!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!!! And don’t worry … I usually only stand out in the middle of country roads or very small town streets. Haven’t tried that yet in the middle of the interstates!!! As to the explanations, this one really took a lot of persistence … I think I pulled out every tool in the Adjustments thingie, lol!!! This one just wouldn’t let me go!!!
ericseyes
Think of some of the great artists of the past and how long they spent on a master piece:)
Lois Bryan replied
So true … I guess that “won’t let me go” thing that this one did is what happens to us all from time to time!!!! Goodness, thank you for even beginning to compare me with “great artists”!!!! WHEEEEE!!!! Where are my dancin’ shoes??? Hugzzz!!!
Veikko Suikkanen
Wonderful work Lois! Lovely see something different fields as here in the Finland, truely here southern Finland is being grown corn in the small amount.
Lois Bryan replied
Hello dear Veikko!!!! Thank you so much .. I’m glad you enjoyed this one … yes, this is a scene that’s very common here in the Maryland and Pennsylvania areas. We have a saying that you want the corn to be as high as an elephant’s eye in July … and we’ve had that two years in a row now. So glad you enjoyed it!!!
Linda Gregory
Fabulous, Lois. I miss really fresh corn!
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Linda!!!! There’s NOTHING like it!!!!! Get it all sloppy with butter, salt it up … munch it right from the cob!!! MMMMMM!!!!
jewelskings
Fantastic Lois! Love the treatment!
Lois Bryan replied
Hey sweetie!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
suzannem73
Beautiful art!! This was worth the effort you put into it.
Lois Bryan replied
Hiii Suzanne!!! I just don’t know what got into me, honestly … I was just not satisfied with this thing … you ever have that happen?? Yet you still believe in the shot?? Once I put the layer on … that seemed to brighten it up without washing it out … I felt like it was finally “cooked.”
Béla Török
Great capture and treatment, dear Lois!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Bela!!! So happy you liked this one!!
Kate Adams
Oh Lois!! this is just fabulous!! great pov and wonderful depth!! – I am surrounded on all four sides lol.
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Kate!!! Thank you!!! Yep I was surrounded!!! Have you ever walked through a corn field and heard the wind clacking the leaves??? There’s nothing so peaceful and freeing!!!
Agnes McGuinness
Such gorgeous, rich colours, and beautiful scenery. Love what you’ve done to this image, Lois. Your treatment really enhances what, I’m sure, must have been an already beautiful original. Agnes xx
Lois Bryan replied
Bless your heart, Agnes … thank you so much!!! I really liked this one but just couldn’t get it to “click” if you know what I mean. I’m so glad you liked the end result!!!
Tallow
fantastic Lois. I wish I could see what you see. We have all kinds of corn fields around my place but I just don’t see anything I believe would look good in a photo
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Dave!!!! Thank you!!! But I’m sure your cornfields are glorious!! I’ve got to tell you … I’d gone past this field several times last year … and when the day was right … good clouds, stalks tall enough … I was like a little kid hopping all around taking all kinds of angles. Maybe that’s what you should try … angles … crazy povs … things like that. Then once they’re in the computer you might see one that inspires you!!!
Karen Tillotson
Beautiful work as always dear Lois! Great perspective, wonderful colour and a super treatment of this wonderful rural scene…(I soooooooo love corn!!! yummy!)
Lois Bryan replied
Hello, hello dear Karen!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! OOOO .. meeee tooo … I’ve gotten to the point where I just lay a whole stick of butter on a little plate and we just roll our corn-on-the-cob around and around on it … then a bit of salt … and MUNCH!!!! MMMMM!!!! It’s messy but it’s goooooood!
JUSTART

Lois Bryan replied

absolutely gorgeous. We have a situation like this down the road from our home. the corn high with the road going through it. I have taken 4 pics. of it and they just have not come out looking like I wanted to. Yes, even sitting on the ground for a long shot. This is beautiful, you GOT it Lois
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks, sweetie!!!! I really appreciate that. I took a lot of shots on this shoot, and have taken even more before and since. For some reason, I just wasn’t happy either. This one did take a good bit of tinkering before I got it to where I was satisfied.
