I’m always fascinated by architecture … especially that which has seen better days. The stories these buildings could tell!!! This wonderful old stairway is located to the side of Dilbert’s General Merchandise which, it is my understanding, is soon to be torn down. It is located in Pavia, Pennsylvania, just off route 869. I took this hand-held image on February 22, 2009, in freezing temps during a light snowstorm with the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter was 1/125, aperture was 5.6, exp was .33, iso was 400. Post processing included hdr in Photomatix from 3 duplicated images at -/+2 eval.

Companion piece to Dilbert’s General Merchandise

It looks like you captured this at either sunset or sunrise. It makes me think of the old west, even though it was taken in PA.
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you, Yuri, actually I took this at about noon … but there was a snow storm coming in so the light was very subdued.

Fantastic photography and work Lois! Peas in a pod, I have also also had a keen fascination with architecture, actually wanted to be an architect! And I love going and discovering old buildings, and sensing what they were like…. love it! Exploring, that’s the word!!! Mystery forest stuff! (maybe that is why I like digital photography and photoshop sooooo much!!) :))) (me thinks you will relate well to that last one!! :)) lol
Lois Bryan replied
Ahhh Vickzzzzz … peas in a pod, indeedy. Separated at birth … you on one end of the big blue ball, me on the other!!! I am soo with you on the architecture thing … I’m finding myself drawn to buildings of any kind more and more. Got to say, on the whole I think those images of mine are the most personally satisfying. And oooh baby … the exploring we could do together!!! WHEEEE!!!!!!!
RavenSoul

jx
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, wow, Jesika … that’s a fabulous compliment … when an image brings up an old memory!!!! I thought that was what this one was all about, too!!!! Thanks, hon!!
Renee Dawson
Love the treatment Lois – it really brings out the rust tones nicely. This reminds me of my childhood. We lived upstairs in a duplex and this staircase reminds me of that. Well, one day (I was 5-6 years old) the Grand River overflowed (no radio warning) and I was playing out in our back yard. I remember hearing this loud noise and looking behind me to see a huge wall of water coming at me. I don’t think I ever ran so fast in all my life! The water was way over my head and I would have surely drowned if I had not made it to that staircase in time.
Lois Bryan replied
OMG!!! Renee … what an extraordinary story, honey!!! WOW … yes, that sounds like it would have been the end of our little ReneeRoo for sure!!!!! Sorry this one brought back such a horrendous memory for you but I hope some good memories too!!!!! Hugzzz!!!

Lois Bryan replied
Hi Ronnie!!! Thank you!!!
Linda Gregory
Gorgeous, Lois. I’m curious to try HDR. The results are just stunning.
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Linda!!! Thank you!!! The HDR is really fascinating. I’d recommend doing the trial version first. You’ll have to clone out Photomatix’s watermark … but I think it’s worth it to figure out if you like the process. It took me a looong time to get to the point where I wasn’t ready to toss the computer out the window. But once you get the hang of it, it’s a very useful tool.
Lois Bryan
Caroline Gorka
Love how you have picked out the tones and colours … now commited to memory :)
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Caroline!! Thank you so much!!! Yes, I think that’s one of the true virtues of photography in a case like this one. This building could be gone at any time … but at least I have lots of captures of it.
