This little image is only one of nearly 400 (yes, I discovered the rapid fire thingie on the new camera over the weekend) I took of these most amazing creatures. It means the world to me that I was able to play with them as I’ve never seen a Monarch in our garden in Maryland. The “lawn” to the cabin next to ours on Blue Knob Mountain in Claysburg Pennsylvania has been left uncut all summer … and the most incredible wild vegetation has grown up. One is this pretty purple flowered stalk … which happen to be very much beloved by the Monarch Butterflies.

Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at shutter speed 1/160, aperture f/10.0, exp 0.00, iso 800. Focal length 220mm.

Monarch belongs to the following groups:

    Tessa Bishop

Such stunning clarity and colour Lois – truly breathtaking!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thank you so much, Tessa … I have always yearned for a Monarch to visit my garden at home … and there up at the cabin were zillions of the things!!! I was like a kid in a candy store … lol … it’s that old “be careful what you wish for” thing I guess!!!!!

  • lorilee

    lorilee

    A very PRETTY capture!!!!!

    Oh, Lori, thank you sweetheart!!!!!!

  • dinghysailor1

    dinghysailor1

    simply…. perfect!
    :)))

  • Lois Bryan replied

Awww .. .Maggie thank you so much!!!!!! I was soo excited to see these guys flitting and playing and dancing in the air with each other … got some shots of that too, but each time they were a bit too far apart when the shutter snapped. But what a joy to see!!!!!

  • AndyReeve

    AndyReeve

Beautiful. Thinks – must start saving for a macro lens.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Andy, thank you so so much!!!!! And yes … DO get a macro lens!!!! But I have to tell you this was actually shot with my 70-300mm vr … you can’t get toooo close to your subject (which, when you’re shooting butterflies and most bugs and birds is a good thing) ... but it also gives the world’s greatest bokeh!!!!! It’s got a sweet spot on aperture from about f/9 to f/13 … but once I figured that out (on this camera, but anything worked on the D40x for some reason) ... it was smooth sailing!!!! Sorry I rambled on, lol!!!!!

    Hey Gary!!!!! thank you!!!

  • Vicki Ferrari

    Vicki Ferrari

Amazing clarity here Lois! Great photography (and your poor eyes, after 400!!!!!) :)))

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hey Vicki!!!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!!!! This camera does NOT want to take a bad picture .. it constantly amazes me!!!! I thought for sure, especially as I was rapid firing, that at least half would be tossers … but they’re not!!! And YES my poor eyes … this after taking about the same amount the day before at an old reconstructed colonial village!!! LOL!!!!

  • jesika

    jesika

Perfectly perfect. So pleased you found the wotsit dodad gizmo…
    jx

  • Lois Bryan replied

laughing Oh Jesika … that dodad is dangerous!! It makes for WAY too many pictures!!!!! ROFL!!!!

  • Curtiss Simpson

    Curtiss Simpson

Pretty one Lois beautiful color and clarity, but wonder how it would look if you rotated it to the right portrait view.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, Curtiss, so amazing that you said that … I was just this minute playing with another one (of the 400, lol) and rotating it. This flower must be relatively lightweight because even these tiny butterflies had the flower heads bending. You’ve just given me leave to post another one of my pics … rotated!!!! LOL!!! I’ll dedicate it to you!!!! Hugzzz!!!

  • Paul Kavsak

    Paul Kavsak

amazing shot – usually these “guys” are constantly moving – I’m surprised at the clarity in the butterfly with a shutter speed of only 1/160! The ISO 800 is also very impressive.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Paul!!! thank you so much!!!! I wish I could take credit for this shot, but I swear, it’s all the D300!!! It just does NOT want to take a bad image!!! The clarity with this thing just blows me away!!! As to shutter speed … the butterflies were flitting in and out of shade and bright sun … it was all I could do to keep up with them. The 800 iso on this camera is nothing … it goes up higher without batting an eyelash!!!!! Something called “Noise Ninja” I think??? Start saving your pennies!!!!

  • ldeiter78

    ldeiter78

  • Lois Bryan replied

Thanks, Lori!!!!! Do you see these guys at your house??

  • Angie McKenzie

  • Ralph Angelillo

    Ralph Angelillo

    Superb shot Lois ! A fave !

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Ralph!! Thank you so much … I’m so happy you enjoyed it!!! And thanks, too, for the fave!!! So kind of you!!

  • Deborah H. Benoit

    Deborah H. Benoit

Glad you found that rapid fire button!! Great shot!!

  • Lois Bryan replied

Ooooooh Deborah laughing I’m not so sure!!!!! I never expected so many of the shots to be good … my eyes are bleeding going over and over trying to “kill” the bad ones!!! LOL!!!! But it’s an amazing function on things that move like the butterflies!!!!! Thanks so so much for visiting, hon!!!

  • Linda Gregory

    Linda Gregory

Beautiful capture, Lois. Yes, that burst mode is fantastic for things moving fast. I’ll bet you won’t mow the meadow again.

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Linda … thank you!!!! Yes it is amazing on moving objects!!! It’s just so totally counterintuitive to how I normally shoot!!! As long as the light stays constant (which it doesn’t of course) it’s an amazingly useful trick!!! As to the lawn … well … my husband LOVES to mow the lawn … but I think I ‘ll try to get him to hold a patch or two and we’ll see what comes up. My horror is that the lady next door, shamed by our perfectly manicured rock pile (lol) will get someone in to mow and there will go all my beautiful winged pals!!!!

  • Trudy Wilkerson

    Trudy Wilkerson

Ok Lois, looks like we have twin pics here… butterfly haven at your house I bet… lovely image…

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hiii Trudy!!!!! Thank you!!! Yes, you know how much I loved your Monarch!!!! This was taken up at the cabin. I haven’t seen a monarch in our garden here at the house. Did see one a few miles away on a bird walk last year … but the shot I took, while it had a gorgeous bokeh, was a bit too out of focus for me.

This summer was the first time I really saw them in my own yard and had a chance to take pics.

  • Lois Bryan replied

I got off a couple of shots of a monarch on a bird walk last year not far from home (shots turned out a little blurry), so I know they’re in the area. But never in our garden. Seeing them up at the cabin Sunday was SUCH a kick!!!

  • Beve Brown-Clark

  • Irene Burdell

    Irene Burdell

Beautifully composed Lois , I hardly see any butterflies only the cabbage whie ones which are not very pretty . Beautiful work. x

  • Lois Bryan replied

Irene … you’re going to have to plant some flowers that they love. There’s actually a “butterfly bush” that they will go right to. They also love cone flowers (echinacea) and lantana. Here’s something you might find useful butterfly flowers . But I don’t have a clue what these wild things are that the Monarchs were enjoying!!!

  • Kathy Reid

    Kathy Reid

Beautiful Lois, wonderful detail and clarity. Monarchs really add that ‘something special’ to the garden as they pass through!

Great work with shooting it. I was playing with butterflys last subday in Kose, the place what is 30 km from Tallinn. Close to the river was one nice and high hill, where were flowers and grass. Butterflys like this place . I saw there admiral in latin Aglais urticae ,white Pieris brassucae, Inachis io. This was so so sapid to have a good picture at them with my Canon PowerShot A 570. My better camera ha one problem now…

  • Lois Bryan replied

Oh, Meeli … did you post any of your beautiful pics yet??? I must stop by and see!!!!!! I’m sorry your good camera is having troubles .. I hope you can get it fixed soon, sweetie!!!! hugzz!!

  • Victoria Jostes

    Victoria Jostes

what a terrific shot! combining your talent with that wonderful camera, its a match made in heaven! (am wondering about the numbers of monarchs you saw – could it be that they’re getting ready for their journey to mexico?? the generation that flies is the longest lived of the year, & their mating doesn’t take place till late next winter on their way back up north)

  • Lois Bryan replied

Hi Victoria!!!!! Thank you so much for your sweet comment about the camera … I’m just constantly amazed at the quality it produces. I love my D40x .. but the D300 .. WOW!!! I wondered the same thing you did about the monarchs. Had they just emerged or were they getting ready for their journey?? I don’t know enough about them to answer. As to the numbers, in all seriousness, I’d say there were half a dozen in front of my eyes wherever I looked … and that doesn’t count the ones I couldn’t see that were below my line of sight. I’ve never seen anything like it. They were also dancing, in pairs, in the air. I captured it several times, but nothing worth posting, sorry to say. It was glorious!!!

While I was there I gushed a bit about the iso … the guy nodded wisely and mumbled something about the “noise ninja” ... lol … I’m not the only one who has commented on it!!!!

    Sandra Heath

bet I’m not the last to comment! Picture perfect Lois. My dear hubby bought me a macro lens for our anniversary last week and I’ve taken hundreds of shots but I got overexcited and everything shook!! I think I’ll have to get some tranquilisers!

  • Lois Bryan replied

LOL!!! Oh, Sandra, I hear ya!!! Macro photography is a whole different ball game!! I must tell you that this particular shot isn’t a macro … I actually took it with my 70-300mm which is good for birdies, but I love it for insect shots too, if you’re going for the whole bug, like this one. I’ve found the trick with macros is mostly using a tripod … that and a narrow aperture, say around 13ish or larger??? But … sad to say … usually the tripod is necessary. Also, if you’re doing the flower thing outside … make sure it’s a no wind day!!! Good luck and let me know when you post your first macro!!!!!
